I've alsodonated concerts for fund raisers and just donated my 56th pint ofblood to the blood bank. This is real community action. I didn'tneed Newt to tell me my responsibilities as a citizen because hewouldn't know.

I've known a number of people who'vegone on Welfare of one kind or another in their lives and *NONE* ofthem have thought of this as a lifestyle or something particularlydesirable. They have, instead, been more concerned about stayingalive while they regrouped. It has been predominantly successful,too: they've been able to get some more education, find better jobs(or jobs period) and get back on their feet with more stability thanthey had before. I don't think the request for food bank donations is ironic at all. It's more like a recognition that Newt and his supporters have gotten a bad image (whether or not justified) which they need to counter. This is a sensible PR move which will laso result in positive community benefits. Nothing wrong with it at all.At least this war will result in more and more benefits (both sides giving to the food bank). Sort of like a potlach, no? How can we structure other political disputes this way? Here I have a little problem with the Newt side's argument. Sure the Republican Medicare proposal is to reduce the rate of increase increase in total funding. Total funding will still increase. But, from the point of view of the individual beneficiary there will be a definite reduction in services. This is the critical point, which, unfortunately the Democrats are not articulating at all. Of course, this doesn't mean that all people will endure worse medical care. But it is certain that they will get less from Medicare and be responsible for more on their own. But of course the Republicans aren't saying this, even though their program is entirely consistent with their philosophy. They keep emphasizing that funding will increase under their proposal, which can tend to mislead people into thinking that their individual benefits will increase. Which they won't.
westin hotel : Have any of you stayed at (or heard anything about) the Saint FrancisWestin Hotel in San Fran?We have a Saint Francis and a Sir Francis. The Sir Francis is the SirFrancis Drake, a scab hotel that ought not be patronized. I'm notfamiliar with a Westin Hotel. The Saint Francis is one of our oldest hotels. It compares favorablywith any classic hotel in the world of comparable age. It faces UnionSquare and has taxis and cable cars at the door, sight-see and publicbuses across the street, shopping, at the corners and within a few shortblocks' walk, comparable to any over-priced shoppingstreet/neighborhood/district on Earth, a gantlet of poets, singers,musicians, hustlers, working girls, and bums near, but not interferingwith, all of the three pedestrian entrances. One of my lottery-winning fantasies is becoming a resident of the SaintFrancis. It has several apartments. For the epitomy of luxury and service, you might prefer the CliftHotel, two blocks up Geary Street from the Saint Francis.The elevators are now operated by the guests but, during the EisenhowerAdministration, they had operators and I was one of them, uniformed anddickey'd. I had in my elevator, on different occasions, men I hated andat whom I glared as intently and disfavorably as possible: VicePresident Richard Milhaus Nixon (thewp, yechch, gotta wash the keyboard)and Arthur Godfrey. During that time, at 4 o'clock four musicians gathered on the openmezzanine overlooking the lobby to play classic chamber music. I justloved it. The clock in the lobby has been one of the meeting places for SanFranciscans for at least ninety years, similar to a clock at a railroadstation where New Yorkers have been known to meet.
westin hotel : Westin (Western International) bought the St. Francis in the 1970s (or early 80s?) and changed the beautiful name of this San Francisco landmark to the dorky "Westin St. Francis."FJA, you might want to check for more information. Iworked at a radio station in the hotel from 1970-1979, but I haven'tset foot in it in years, so I can't give you up-to-date information,I'm afraid. Except, as Dave H. mentioned, that it's *expensive*!One of the best in San Francisco. Good location for tourists, rightnear the start of the cable car in downtown.Beautiful hotel in the classic "old San Francisco" style, withattentive staff, spacious rooms, and gracious decor. Directlyacross the street from Union Square, within easy walking distance of major shopping, and right on the cable line.Pricey, but definitely worth it. I've had the good fortuneto have stayed there several times over the years -- always agrand experience! We stayed there a number of years ago and had a nice stayuntil checkout. It really is a beautiful hotel. We were offered a chance for express checkout but couldn't seethe bill until after we arrived home. We had a package through Unitedwhere we received a discount on the room and had a voucher. They tookthe voucher and added the discount we were to receive to the bill. Itried to call and write many times and never received a response.Somebody was always supposed to call back but never did. Eventually Iwrote to American Express and the excess charge was removed. Six months later I received a letter threatening to sue me. Afriend who is a lawyer wrote a letter and they called him andapologized. They never had the courtesy to call me. I have alwaysthought it was extraordinarily shoddy treatment from a 5 diamondhotel.

"I don't know where KPMGis getting its information, but it seems as if they are just outlooking for information that justifies what the city is doing."Mr. Jarvis says within weeks of the non-smoking ban coming intoeffect, he was forced to close Hartwell's, the Westin's nightclub, onenight a week because of declining business.He says revenue at the nightclub and a lounge at the Westin has nowdropped between 30 and 40 per cent since Aug. 1. Although the hotelhas not laid off employees, Mr. Jarvis says those employed atHartwell's and the lounge have had to pick up extra shifts tocompensate for the drop in income.
