venice hotels : I'm looking in the book for a phone number, and only seem to find one in Europe. It's 41 21 204 640, Fax is 41 21 235 938.I adore Venice, so much that I named our new kitten Venezia. so, enjoy!MichelThere are a number of hotels much more affordable than the one you mentioned in Venice. And what is the problem with sharing a bath down the hall? Americans are the ones who need our showers every day; if you stay in a hotel with other Europeans, you'll rarely have to wait for the bathroom. Besides, you can usually buy yourself a good meal for the difference in price from a room with a bath to one without. Seems a pretty easy decision to make for me. Yes, you can find cheaper hotels, but they will be farther from San Marco Piazza or a bit run down. And a bathroom down the hall may not be an inconvenience for some people. When we were there in June '92, we had a one year old and thought it worth the extra money. The original poster also requested a bathroom in the room and a hotel that was in a good location and in good shape. This particular hotel, the Boston with the MinOtel chain, was also recently renovated. Being most buildings are 400-500 years old, they can get a bit run down! When I've traveled to Europe, I don't go that often so comfort and ease usually takes priority over trying to save a few dollars here and there.
venice hotels : First of all, proximity to Piazza San Marco is NOT really a benefit! 90%of the tourists who visit Venice never venture beyond San Marco. I avoidstaying near San Marco to avoid the crowds. There are wonderful hotels inmuch preferable neighborhoods--like Dorsoduro. And Venice is so samllthat nothing is really THAT far from San Marco.My favorite part is the small, back alleys and canals - probably where the locals live in off-tourist times. And Burano too.How about some addresses/phone numbers, then, of these hotels? venice hotels : Why not name some of these hotels you recommend instead of scoldingsomeone else's taste?I have mentioned the hotels in Venice; as a matter of fact, I've spent a lot of time e-mailing phone and fax numbers to folks who have requested them. If you missed my previous posting about Venice hotels, then I'm sorry. I'll just suggest that if anyone wants to stay in the center of Venice and not break the bank, pick up Rick Steves "Best of Italy" and try some of the places that he mentions. And I don't feel that I'm "superior" by taking a room without a bath; I just think that many Americans have a distorted view of sharing a bathroom, thinking that they will be standing in the shower line the next morning. It has never happened to me. Granted, it is nice to have a bathroom in the room, and when we can, we do. However, when the hotel clerk rattles off prices for rooms and you come to find that a room with a bath is 50% more than the one without, simple math will show what you are saving. I also don't travel with kids, but I wish that when I was 12 years old my parent took me to Europe; good for you! wrote:

Venice is absolutely enchanting at night and part of the enjoyment of visiting the city to begin with was calling the city home for three days and wandering the canals in my neighborhood. The price for our room was $50 a night including breakfast, with a view of the Grand Canal, but, without a bath. Actually the hotel did have rooms with baths but from my experience I knew that it wasn't necessary FOR ME, so I have no idea what the room would have cost otherwise. Please don't lump me into a group where I don't belong.
