Getting to the Mall area of DC (e.g., L'Enfant Plaza stop)won't take more than 10 or 15 minutes, including the wait for a train.

I *live* in the opposite direction, and I actuallylike my neighborhood that's within walking distance of a green linestation -- but it would be a very boring place to spend a vacation!But I was hoping this was a fun family! Seriously, though, I do seeyour point -- and many of these neighborhoods do have inexpensiverestaurants that might well be better for families after a long andtiring day of sightseeing. With that in mind, here's a suggestion if theoriginal poster is unable to find a reasonably priced hotel in DC: Quality Inn & Suites 7200 Baltimore Blvd. College Park, MarylandThis one should be well under $100 a night and it is about a half mile,perhaps a bit more, from the College Park Metro station on the GreenLine. The train ride itself will be around 25 minutes long to get toL'Enfant Plaza (convenient to some of the museums, including Air &Space). The hotel is just south of the University of Maryland campus,so there are lots of "student type" restaurants in the area (but littlein the way of fine dining). Rates should be available through theQuality Inn site (try ).

My fave hotel is theEmbassy Row Hilton, @ DuPont Circle, and I have never had to pay over$100/night when booking through the above service (the normal rack room rateis around $200). The rates I've received are lower than I could have gottenby either calling Hilton or the hotel itself directly. July 4th weekendmight be "tight" for low - cost lodgings, however....The site lists many hotels/motels adjacent to Metro stations in the suburbanMD/VA areas.They don't seem to be taking reservations beyond this year on their websiteyet; you could try calling the phone number listed on the site for info aboutbooking next July 4th. There are good descriptions of the properties on thesite, so you can get a "feel" for what you might want. Also, you reserveusing a credit card, but you are free to cancel or change your reservationsper the individual hotel's change/cancellation policy (I've done this withabsolutely no problem).

I think if you really huntthrough the link to Toronto.com I gave you, you can find a hotel for $85CADa nite, but I guarantee you it will be very much like the cheapest hotel inthe Chicago area.I don't think the Radison Downtown is too bad, and the Holiday Inn is nice,I took a boo last night for an airport hotel; came up withQuality Inn @ $89 plus 12% tax.forget about public transportation around the airport. However, $20won't get you downtown. Most of the Airport Hotels are in the $14 (zoneclosest to the airport). BTW. This is more expensive than taking one of the"hotel's" shuttles. Most hotels on the strip offer this service.
