I lived in Londonfor 15 years and couldnt make hide nor hair of itThe Tower Thistle is on the river next to St KatherinesDock and the Tower of London. You can catch ariver boat to Greenwich or have a drink at one of thebistros in the Converted Dock. The views are spectacularIf you'd prefer the West End then the Trafalgar Thistleis just off Trafalgar Square and you cant get more central than that !Needless to say I have no connection with thistle hotelsor any aspect of the travel industry. thistle hotels : Nowhere near either, but the Station Hotel, Dumfries is out of this world- especially its Scottish menu and its wine cellar!!Don't think we'll be going that far north, but thanks for the thought!There are two railway hotels I can think of that are **really** posh.First there is the "North British" hotel, just outside Edinburgh Waverleystation, and there there is the railway hotel just outside York station. Bothhave to be seen to be believe, and both will charge you an arm and a leg tostay there.When I you going. I'll be in York on December 23, so I can't find out the nameof the hotel if you like. However I'm sure somebody else will be able to supplymore details.The North British Hotel has now been renamed the "Balmoral Hotel". Check out and you'll see a picture. See what Imean? This is some hotel. Right outside Edinburgh station.And I think the one in York is called the "Royal York Hotel". Check outIf these are too expensive and posh, then use to start a search. This will also helpyou with your London choice.

We ended up in a nice little hotel across from the race-course, in a place that used to be a girls' school, (I think)[ more snippage ] Correct - The Royal York is a 4-star, 5-crown *seriously* posh hotel, butit's probably *the* railway hotel, and has the advantage(?) of being withineasy walking distance of the station and the National Railway Museum (ifmemory serves, someone told me that a room at the Royal York can set you backas much as 350 quid a night)
thistle hotels : If you want a *proper* railway hotel, the Royal York is the only show intown (in York, anyway), although there's plenty of B+B style accommodationnear the railway line if that's what you're after. If you want a good meal inrailway surroundings, check out `The Sidings' restaurant, north of York on theA19 - quite pricey, but great atmosphere.
