san francisco hotels : Hi,Traveling to SF in July and cannot decide where to staY. We arelooking for smaller hotel or inn. Here is what we are considering...HOTEL DRISCO..we are concerned about location, are we going to have totake a taxi everywhere?HELP...any comments, suggestions, recommendations would be muchappreciated! It's not within walkingdistance to anything so, yes, you'll have to drive, take a cab, or takepublic transportation to get to tourist stuff.Vintage Court 650 Bush near Powell 415/392-4666 2 blocks to Union Square all non-smokingInn at Union Square 440 Post between 415/397-3510 between Mason and Powell 800/288-4346 one-half block to Union Square Older green building.Hotel Diva 440 Geary 415/346-6613 between Taylor & Mason or 800/553-1900 one-and-a-half blocks to Union Square Laurel InnPresidio Avenue & Califo, San Francisco, CA 94102(415) 567-8467Union Square has a bit of big-city background hum, but it didn't strike meas loud. If you're a few flights up, it should be plenty quiet.We stated there two years ago - it was okay, room kind of small andbathroom VERY small, but clean, and good location. However, we'll be inSF again for business for the week of 4/28 and we chose a differenthotel this visit, if that tells you anything. We'll be staying thistime at the recently restored Cartwright ( )which was recommended by one of DH's business associates - $80/night!
san francisco hotels : I'd appreciate any comments folks would have about cheap-but-clean hotelsin SF. I've been looking hard at the Mosser and the Pickwick and wouldlove to hear from anyone who's stayed at either recently, but wouldappreciate any other recommendations in that price range. Hoping to findsomeplace reasonably clean and centrally located for the price, preferablynot quite smack in the middle of the Tenderloin. From prior posts on the topic, I'm assuming that small rooms and a certainamount of street noise are to be expected, and that's no problem by me. Here's a list of the less expensive hotels/motels in San Francisco with theMosser and Pickwick as comparison. They are probably about as good as anyin this price range.The only one I've actually stayed in is the TraveLodge in the Civic Centeron Ellis. This is technically in the Tenderloin, but people who live in thearea prefer the term "Van Ness Corridor". It's reasonably save if you don'tventure any farther east of Polk Street.It will be a challenge to find a room in a decent hotel in San Francisco for$60, but it's possible. It should be much easier to find one for $75.

Also, many major city bus routes run along Market Street in front of the hotel.Howard Johnson's 385 9th St. near Harrison 415/431-5131 from $79 or 800/I-GO-HOJO The Stud is next door. If you're feeling wild, Tranny (as in transexual) night is Tuesday night at 10.I've gotten 4 star hotels in downtown San Francisco for $60. But you mustremember that you can't choose the hotel.The forum will give you an idea ofwhat hotels others bidding on priceline.com have gotten. But you can choosethe zone and quality level. Once your offer is accepted, you can't get a refundif you can't make the trip.This was fine & friendly when I was there a few years ago, but they'veapparently changed hands so I can make no claims:Try a hostel. THe one at Ft. Mason is really nice overlooking theGOlden Gate Bridge and ALcatraz. Free parking. Easy access to city busand cable cars. Bunks around $20 per night.

After some research, wehave pretty much decided to stay at one of the nicer hotels down atFisherman's Wharf -- the Sheraton, Marriott or the Ramada. We're willingto pay up to $120/night and hope to get as much in the way of services andlittle luxuries as possible. I'll also be in San Fran in March and have found a hotel closer to the downtown area for $85/night. It's near the cable cars so getting to Fisherman's Wharf is not a problem. I am looking for acheaper hotels (tight budget) around union station (or near underground railstation nearby) in LA and around the union square area in San Francisco.I am looking for a basic hotel room with attached bathroom (non-share) andwill be staying about a week in both places. They are not a cheap budget hotel, but if you book early enough in advance, they have a couple smaller rooms that are pretty reasonable ($89-$129 a night) and might even have a discount rate for staying a full week with them. It's right up the street from Union Square, at the gates of Chinatown and near at least a couple of trolley lines.Try the Sheehan Hotel in San Francisco. Rates start at $79 per nite, includes continental breakfast and an indoor swimming pool. It is near Union Square. Was the YMCA in a past life. Gets great reviews by all the hotel rating books.
