san diego hotels : - Tide pools on the ocean side of Point Loma (nature in the raw and small)- San Diego bay for sailing and other water stuff (Mission Bay too, but "PWC"jackasses have taken it over and run out just about everyone else)- La Jolla Cove and caves and seal rock and "seal beach" at The Children's Pool- Torrey Pines State Park and beach, a bit north of the famous gold course- 70 miles of beaches in the County, many "unimproved" and wild- mountains to 6,500 feet an hour east of the city, with many wild areas,trails, etc.- deserts just a little further east -- Anza-Borrega Desert State Park, a hugenatural area, less than 90 minutes from Broadway and 4th Avenue in downtown SanDiego- more mountains to the northeast including the famous Mount Palomar- one of the worlds greatest horticultural parks (the San Diego Zoo -- it's notjust animals, not even primarily animals) in the middle of a great downtownpublic parkRegards, Harry, San Diego-- San Diego Info: Amtrak Info: (To e-mail reply change no.spam to home dot com)

There are no hotels in downtown San Diego for $30 a night. You'relooking at the price for a flop house, or MAYBE a youth hostel -- there are acouple of those (one of which REQUIRES a passport). If a hostel, you might geta "private" room for $30 -- communal bath down the hall. If that's what youwant, fine (a 23-year-old friend stayed at the passport-required hostel acouple of months ago, in a dorm room, and loved it).There are also no hotels at all that can legitimately say "near the zoo". TheZoo is in the middle of Balboa Park (a city park approaching the size of NY'sCentral Park). I cannot recommend any hotels on the "edge" of the park --rough neighborhoods or just sleazy looking.
san diego hotels : All downtown San Diego hotels are _convenient_ to the Zoo, by car (5 minutesand free parking) or by city bus. All Mission Valley (Hotel Circle and others)hotels are also _convenient_ to the Zoo -- about 10 minutes driving, muchlonger by public transit.Mission Valley Hotels are most convenient and central to all of the mainvisitor attractions (Zoo, Sea World, beaches, Old Town, and the Gaslamp Quarterdowntown). Downtown hotels are next most convenient overall. But downtownhotels, for what you get, are more expensive.More comments in other replies in this thread. But first -- PLEASE see my SanDiego Visitor Information web site, address below. And please get a map of SanDiego which will make all this information MUCH easier to understand.Seattle is another nice place to visit. I've enjoyed it very much. But, theweather is, at best, chancy, whereas it's nearly guaranteed in San Diego.The Grand Canyon is something everyone should see once, but in my opinion it isno more than a 1/2 day thing. It's also 100 miles from anything else. I don'tknow where the closest airport is, but not close.

san diego hotels : Probably too late for you, but yes there are inexpensive hostels here -- thoughnot $20 for TWO adults! That's ridiculous.There are no _hotels_ worthy of the name "hotel" for less than $40/night in SanDiego.
