rome hotels : I've decided to go to Rome for 5 days or a week in July - a quick fix ofItaly - and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, cheap (familyrun perhaps?) friendly hotel within reach of the centre of the city. Also, are RyanAir still the cheapest for flights from London to Rome?Will--Join the Pingographers & share your photos for freeThe hotel Giada would be a good choice. It's a short walk from the centre. It's a simple, yet comfortable hotel. A room in July would be £32 B&B.It may be. Go from Stanstead is another cheap option. Thanks Ian - have emailed you, but wasn't sure if your address was aspam-trap or not - so let me know if you haven't yet received it.Will--Join the Pingographers & share your photos for freeWe stayed at the Hotel Verona in February and were very pleased. It'sfamily run, small, lots of charm, and most important, very clean. It'sclose to Termini Train Station and the Colossium. I don't think it'sconsidered to be in a prime tourist location, but we liked it. The linkis below.I too will be going to Rome in July and for the first time, I might add, andso I don't have any first-hand experience with hotels. I ended up booking, via Expedia, at the Olympic Hotel, not too far from the Vatican at about $80per night. Did not much have time to look around since July is not too faraway.
rome hotels : I will be going to Rome March 11 and would like to hear from peoplewith ideas and suggestions for accommodations and sights there. As far as hotels go, I am going with my parents and my grandfather. We'd like to stay away fro the four and five star hotels, focusing instead oncertainly are a plus. Also, if it's on the third floor or higher, an elevatorwould be nice, since my grandfather is eighty-nine years old and not exactlya marathon champion anymore. ;-) I stayed at the Hotel Magic on Via Milazzo near Termini this summer andbathrooms though as far as I could see. I know there are a couple other hotelsin the same building as Hotel Magic. Does anyone know anything about those?Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, as far as sightseeing goes, I will be the only one on this tripwho has been to Rome before. What are some interesting and/or unconventional, offbeat sights in Rome? I'm already planning the usuals: Vatican, Forum,Mamertine Prison, Pantheon, Campidoglio and associated museums, Colesseum,San Pietro in Vincoli, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, et cetera. Have I missedanything of import? I've heard Trastevere across the river is very nice, butI didn't make it last time I was there. Is Castel Sant'Angelo (sp?) worth goingto? (whoops, my editor is acting screwy here.) What about restaraunts or any-thing else that might be interesting for first-time (and returning) visitors? I remember reading in some travel magazine about four or five yearsago (I think it might have been Conde Nast Traveler) about a nifty view of St.Peters' dome through a keyhole somewhere. Would anyone know about that or whatissue that might be in? rome hotels : Thank you all very much in advance for your time and bandwidth. Stowaways accepted...highest bidder gets the cardboard box with airholes.Sam MeyerPresident, Ithaca College chapter, Militant Gardening ClubI think the Canova statute of the naked woman on the divan is also Napoleon'ssister, Pauline, not his wife. Here are three items you do not include: (1) the Catacombs; (2) The Borghese Museum for sculptures that even surpass (some feel)the works of Michaelangelo. They are the unbelievable Bernini sculpturesofDavid, Daphne, Neptune, etc. And there is also Canova's masterpieceof Napoleon's wife reclining nude on a divan; (3) The Bernini sculpture of St. Theresa, rapt in ecstasy oflove for the Savior, receiving in her heart a dart aimed by a smilingangel. An artist friend of mine once remarked that every woman should,at least once in her lifetime, reflect on her visage such a look ofecstasy. Overhead, on a balcony, are a group of on-lookers. Thisremarkable sculpture is in the church of Santa maria della Vittoriaat the corner of Via Venti Setiembre and via Orlando, just a blockor so from the Piazza della Republica (near central station). You canturn on special lighting by inserting some lira coins in a speciallighting apparatus. Don't miss this or the Bernini sculptures atthe Villa Borghese: they are (1) Napoleon's sister as Venux Victrix byCanova; (2) Apollo and Daphne at the moment of capture; (3) the Rapeof Proserpine; (4) Aeneas and Anchises (fleeing from Troy and theGreeks). The Villa Borghese also has hundreds of other famous sculesand paintings. I mention it because I don't think any of the commercial]city tours of Rome ever even mention it, much less inlude a visit. rome hotels : The premier hotel with the great reputation is the Hassler in a former Medicipalace on top of the SPanish steps.
