How can you expect them to give you a guarantee youcan't give them? And how do you expect them to guarantee solving aproblem you have only just woken up to yourselves and, from your otherposts, that you still don't fully understand.No offense meant, but you must wake up to the fact that addressing Y2Kis an immense effort that must be *shared* by you, your customers andyour vendors. As a former Marriot shareholder, I knew that Marriots are not all owned by the Marriot corporation. Some hotels are franchises, some are leased, some are other imaginative chain of ownership constructs that an MBA having a bad drug experience musthave dreamed up. (The building is owned by one company, the hotel isoperated by another, the land is leased from a third, each company has a matrix of owners, shareholders, officers, etc.)

Not if you're a guy with hundredmillion bucks of your family's money invested in a couple dozen Marriot hotels. To you it looks like a bunch of corporate drones playing silly games and you'll want corporate to give YOU a compliance guarentee letter. In fact, you'll have each of your couple dozen managers demand that they get their own Y2K compliance guarentee from central IT.By the way, I'm no longer a Marriot shareholder, I sold that stock earlier this year.Because I don't care whether the company I owe money to makes it ornot. I can pay them, or I can pay their creditors, or I can just holdon to the money until somebody asks for it.Somebody who owes _me_ money is different. They'd better notdisappear.Don't know about you, but *my* bank owes *me* more than I owe them. marriot hotels : In as much as "prevention" is better than "repair", whatkinds of efforts are individuals taking to avoid a "totalitarian" political future. I have mostlybeen a political but am beginning to get concerned enough to stir my self to action. The question is "what actions" Letters to polical figures????? Editorial letters ???? Some other use of internet?? Other use of other online services??? join militia??? join fundamentalist church??? become active in local politics?? become active in tate politics??? other ideas??? -> something that givesmore positive feedback than the above Right on. Notice how many areas politicized education impacts: Itpre-spins the "educated" people who end up in the judiciary and the otherbureacracy, news and entertainment industries, and some other nodes ofinfluence. A very hopeful sign is the rise of private schools, many ofthem church-related, being gotten up for the express purpose of avoidingteaching this claptrap. I agree, supporting efforts to educate rather than indoctrinate are very much to the point in helping promote *cultural* survival.Mr. DeGroff:Your post poses questions both interesting and troubling. Your comments that you had been 'apolitical' and that 'prevention is better that repair' tell me you have yet to go through some of more common attempts to 'fix' the societal problems, e.g., letters to the power structure, voting, and some level of activism.
marriot hotels : In the late 60's and early '70s I was active in the Young Republicans with little or no perceived result (except fopr the election of Mr. Nixon). Through the 80's I was active and held state office in my state's Libertarian Party, again with little little or no percieved results (except for the loss of my DoD Secret clearance). Regretfully, I have come to the belief that either my skills at changing society were insufficient or that the degradation of our culture and government is too far advanced to change.Now, as a 50-year-old with a relatively new family and a 10-year-old son, my emphasis is on ensuring that I, my family, and selected friends can adapt to a changing political environment, and wring whatever freedom and comfort is possible in a system that is bad and getting worse. In addition to my maintaining my day job and personal security/survival preparations, I network in the best way I know how: my son's elementary school (as a volunteer and PTA member); activity in the scouts (as a past Den Leader and Cubmaster); in my church (as a Sunday School teacher); and, of course, on information exchanges such as this one.

For what they're worth, here are my comments:1. Letters to the editors, public figures, joining the militia: a wonderful catharsis, but if you're truly concerned about an in-place intrusive government, you'll raise your visibility to what I consider an untenable level.2. Entering state or local politics: again, on the worker-bee level, a wonderful catharsis. But if you actually expect to gain power, either as a king-maker or elected master, you must eschew any survivalist philosophies; "apres-moi, l'deluge" is the required orthodoxy of all politicos! On the other hand, community activism, such as school-board special elections, block-> 3. Join a fundamentalist church. I guess it depends on-> whether or not your personal religious beliefs would be-> compromised, and whether the particular type of-> 'fundamentalism' is of value to your plans. One church that-> emphasizes preparedness, family and church community-> closeness, and all-around good values is the Church of Jesus-> Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons). Although not one-> myself, I admire their philosophies and life-style. I don't-> know whether or not you'd consider them 'fundamentalist'-> though; with 8-9 million members and beaucoup political-> power, they're pretty mainstream (aside from some-> theological aspects) to me. Other, more radical groups like-> the Church of Jesus Christ Christian - Aryan Nations have an-> extremely high profile and probably a negative net value for-> most of us. Sir, while I agree with much of your posting, I must takeumbrage at points expressed by you here. While it is not my desire topromote any particular belife system, there are those that people needto be warned against; The Mormons are one such group. I will make nostatements as to theology here but deeds, The L.D.S "church" has some ofthe largest financial holdings in the States and they don't walk theirtalk at all. Mines like the Kennicot open pit mine, and companies likeMorton Salt and Morton Thiokol are owned by the L.D.S. church as well asHotel and casinos in Las Vegas. This in it's self might not be unethicalexcept for the doctrine of Tithing which mandates that every member"donate" 10% of their income to the church (before taxes). This cashflow is not allocated to the running of local branches but is reinvestedby the church in SLC. Individual Branches and Wards must raise their ownoperating/building funds aside from tithing revenue. The L.D.S. churchtalks a lot about family and self relyance but is a cash orientedbuisness that usually puts expediance first. It doesn't jive to preachabout good stewardship while operating the countries largest open pitcopper mine. It also doesn't jive to talk about "Family values" and thentake children from their mothers arms, which is how the church has oftentreated Native American families ( especially with the Dineh people). Italso distroys family when abusive fathers are given scriptural sanctionfor their patterns of abuse and when wives are excommunicated anddisfellowshipped for fleeing the trauma inflicted by the husband.This was my mother and my father and it was our family that wasdistroyed by Mormon hypocracy. I could rant more, but I would rather just express my owngladness at being free of them. Any Organization that insists on beingpaid in exchange for salvation and spirituality has lost sight of themark; We don't need a thin dime to go to the next life and last time Ichecked the King James, Jesus was a poor carpenter who only really gotmad when He saw the bankers taking over the Temple. The Mormon Churchmay make a lot of noise about being a testiment for Christ, but theiractions do not match their propaganda. What would Jesus say if he wereasked about the F.B.I. and the C.I.A.'s heavy recruitment of ex-mormonmissionaries, I wonder? Would He consider this a good reccomendation?
