marriot hotel : It is about 5:26 P.M. I just saw fire trucks go by. I haveno idea if that has anything to do with the protest. Isee that news crews from local television stations arehere. I do know that on our way over we walked and rolledpast the San Francisco Chronicle office. Traffic isproceeding normally on the streets with electric busses,taxis, regular cars and lots of pedestrians. Of course,around 5:00 we also began leafletting pedestrians. At anyevent I need to return to the other side of the streetwhere I have my station in the protest line. Be gettingback with you if I can.This is Bill Scarborough reporting from San Franciscoregarding the ADAPT demonstration. My previous reportmentioned a fire engine going by. Well, it had nothing todo with the demonstration - I just happened to see a fireengine going by and happened to note it. The demonstrationseemed to have gone fairly well. There was chanting. Therewas, for a period, closure of the hotel. Later on thepeople were allowed in and out of the hotel with a lot ofwork from the police. Somewhere around 7:00 we allproceeded back to the hotel. I was pulled aside to do somechores and was not able to find out the resolution oftoday's activities. I'll have to get back with the YellowDream Machine readers later. ADAPTprotesters are chanting "Clinton, Clinton, what do youknow, nursing homes have got to go". There are a largenumber of people in wheelchairs inside the countyThis is Bill Scarborough reporting from inside the County Democratic Headquarters in San Francisco, Caliifornia. Demonstrators at the front entrance have been chanting "the people united will never be defeated". Demonstrators inside the office were given a special treat - the Democratic officials are installing a wide-screen color T.V. and installing close-captioning for ADAPT people inside the office to watch the Presidential debate tonight. It's kind've a friendly confrontation in which a number of demonstrators have put on Clinton-Gore buttons. The party officials have been helpful towards people of ADAPT. We're now beginning to sit down to watch, right now, the news and then later the debate. In any event, I will be giving more news as it becomes available. It's 5:00 P.M. in San Francisco, California on this Oct.19. There was watching of the debate inside the Democratic Headquarters. The people on the inside of the headquarters have already been told the good news. The people on the outside are now getting the good news and are now applauding and cheering because there has been some compromise with the Clinton leadership - beefing up of language regarding attendant services in the community.
marriot hotel : I talked to Wayne Blake. He says it's still far short of what he'd like, but we have achieved some sort of compromise on this. The news is being announced, and there is cheering to those who are in the entranceway and out in the street. More news as it becomes available. Here I am, Bill Scarborough. We're at the United States federal building in Downtown San Francisco. There've been reports of some arrests. Protesters are accumulating at the front entrance to the building, as are police and barricades. It is about 12:08 P.M. pacific time. Peopleare chanting "people are dying, shame on you". Now there's some cheering as I talk from this payphone. There have already been some people arrested and apparently taken away. What's happening right now that caused the immediate cheering I do not know. Occasionally there's a siren but whether that has anything to do with what's going on here I don't know. marriot hotel : This is Bill Scarborough. I reported earlier today that there were 49 people arrested Oct.20 in Sanfrancisco. The number may have been only 29. Further news as it comes. The number of people arrested in the Oct.20 demonstrations of ADAPT in San Francisco: Forty-five, according to the newspapers here in San Francisco. More news as it comes. It is High Noon here in San Francisco, pacific time. ADAPT prtesters have stationed themselves at every entrance to the Marriot hotel, where the American Health Care Association nursing home lobby-people are staying. Police are also staioned at each entrance and exit. At several exits the police have barricades. At one place there is a set of barricades set up so as to allow people to leave, but in order to leave they must look at barrricades to the left and to the right, on the other side of which are ADAPT protesters shouting "people are dying, shame on you, people are dying shame on you". At one point Wayne Blake(?) announced that some 15 people in wheelchairs had actually gone into the Marriot hotel. It is my understanding that there are some sort of Americans With Disabilities Act hearing going on inside, but I don't have confirmation of this. More news as it becomes available.
marriot hotel : This is Bill Scarborough reporting again at the Marriot hotel at 777 Market St. in San Francisco. Just a few minutes ago I saw the protesters who had gotten inside the Marriot hotel - there were fifteen. I saw them coming out through a gauntlet of protesters who were cheering them on and applauding them as they were being put into vans to be taken in for processing. As it is, we still have ADAPT protesters at the entrances and exits, although at one main entrance the police have it barricaded in such a way that the people do get to come in and out of the building, although not without having protesters to the right and left of them chanting. More news as it becomes available.I file this report at 12:45 during the noon hour, on Market St. in San Francisco, California in front of the Marriot hotel. The main delivery entrance of the Marriot hotel faces 4th St. That is the entrance where more of the action is happening. At that entrance, there are barricades that go from one side to the other side of the passageway in and out of the building. People in the Marriot can drive in and drive out, walk in and walk out only through that entrance. In order to go in and go out, they must go by protesters chanting various chants. There was an ateempt about ten minutes ago to close off 4th St., that is protesters got out in the street and lined their wheelchairs up in a row. Police carefully and patiently and politely removed them from the street, put them back on the sidewalk, told them to please stay on the sidewalk. Only those who obstinately refused to cooperate - who really wanted to be arrested - were arrested among those protesters. At one point a few minutes ago there was a paddywagon filled with protesters, and one of the protesters began thumping on the inside of the van somehow in rhythm to the chants that they were hearing. There'd be a chant on the outside and on or more inside the paddywagon were thumping in rhythm very loudly. There are people coming in and out of this entrance on Market St., but even so on Market St. people must walk past a gauntlet of protesters. People are shouting,"People are dying, shame on you".
