london hotels : I will be staying at the St. Giles based on the recommendation of BA whenI made my booking. The price was $41/night for one person. Maybe someonecan fill me in on this hotel? Did I make a good choice?I can't tell you anything about the Hyde Park Towers but it isprobably very close to Kensington. I suggest you check the FodorsGuide for 1992. I stayed at the Cumberland Hotel in London in 1990 and it is excellent. Not fancy but very nice and extremelyconvenient. It is right at Marble Arch and Hyde Park and KensingtonGardens. Also, it is practically next door to an undergroundstation. Hope this helps. My friend is planning to travel to London in late June. She will be traveling with her family (2 adults, 2 children). They'll be staying for 5 to 6 days. Could anyone recommend a good, medium-priced, centrally located hotel or private residence with rooms to rent?I would prefer it if you could just mail your response to me but posting it here would be ok.Ron+------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------- ++-------------------------------------- --------------------------------------+I am looking for a London hotel that is reasonably priced, is a short! walk from a tube station, has in-room bathrooms and is in a safe part of the city.I found four hotels listed in a guidebook description that seem to fit what Iwant. Does anyone have any experience or further information regarding thefollowing London hotels?

london hotels : Easton Hotel - 40 Belgrave Road Luna House - 47 Belgrave Road These two are very close to Victoria Station (according to my London map.) Tudor Court 10 Norfolk Square Gallenco Hotel 12 Norfolk Square Dolphin Hotel 34 Norfolk SquareI would really appreciate whatever you can tell me about these hotels. Thanks.I stayed in a B&B in Norfolk Square two years ago -- the hotel itselfwas very nice, but the neighborhood was very intimidating after dark. The area isn't well lit, and there were many people loitering in thearea, especially around the tube station and the 24 hour money changer.Still, the proximity to Paddington was convenient. I calmed my ownfears by taking taxis after 10pm.I will be in London for 4 or 5 days at the end of May. Could anyonerecommend any good, clean, cheap hotels to stay at?Also, as I will have a Eurail pass, what is the best way to get toAmsterdam from London? From: ()Subject: London Hotels Newsgroups: Date: 1993-11-11 06:55:33 PST Can anyone recommend a cheap London hotel? Anything better than ahostel or a private bed and breakfast will be great. I've stayed in anumber of "guest houses" outside of the city and was always happy withthe accomodations, but had a bad experience with a "real" bed andbreakfast in London and don't want to risk that again.

london hotels : To be a little more clear, it seems that not all B&B's are the same. They come in 3 categories, a hotel that serves breakfast, a guesthouse, and a real B&B. The first two only seem to differ in size andprice. A hotel can have a hundred rooms and include breakfast with theprice of the room.A guest house may only have 5 rooms, some with private baths and somewith out, and a central dining room where breakfast is served.I have stayed at both of these throughout the United Kingdom and havealways been happy. However, my experience with a regular B&B wasquite different. We actually stayed in this woman's guest room. Ourbreakfast consisted of toast, cereal, juice, and tea (instead of thefull cooked breakfasts I was accustomed to in such places) and therewas no television in the room (which I was also accustomed to). Forthis we paid 25% more than we had paid in any guest house. To top it off, the woman who ran the house was mentally ill. Sheliterally was paranoid. For the two days we were there, if we wantedprivacy we had to go out. She watched how much cereal and bread weate and muttered about how we were eating enough for two meals andwondered if we should be charged extra. She sat and talked to usabout all kinds of ridiculous things. She told us her husband hadleft her and said he would come back if she would see a psychiatrist, but she wouldn't because she was sure that her husband and thepsychiatrist was plotting against her.

london hotels : I would be grateful if any of you who live in London or are familiar with thecity, could give your opinion on the relative merits/demerits of the following London hotels:(1) Tower Thistle Hotel(2) Flemings Hotel, Mayfair(3) The Regent's Park MarriottIt's surprising how often this sort of query comes up. But if you think aboutit, those of us who live in Lndon have our own homes to stay in, so we're the last people to be in a psoition to tell you about the relative merits/demeritsof London hotels. All I can say is that they're all big hotels, the service willbe good and reliable, the cost phenomenal. We stopped using the Tower Thistle for visitors because it was so dreadful.Actually most expensive hotels in UK are disappointing. They tend to bepretentious and offer poor service and shoddy decor.I'd suggest you try hotels like the Queens gate hotel (I think!) on, yes,Queensgate! THis is a good place to stay. South of Hyde park, close toMuseums, close to the airport access road (a4/m4). Stay away from Bloomsbury (too small) and West End proper, or Mayfair.

london hotels : I must be holding my map upsidedown, I always thought Queensgatewas on the North side of Hyde Park! You're thinking of Queensway where the old Whitely's used to be - I quite like like the way they've done it up, the area makes a fairly pleasant alternative toOxford street for shopping, and is also notable for the large number of shopscatering to Britain's Arabic community.Queen's Gate runs south from Hyde Park to Old Brompton Road in South Kensington. It's the road in which the building housing the Deparments of Computing and Maths in Imperial College is situated, and also has a number of embassiessituated in it (Iraqi, Afghan, Bangladeshi and a few others). When I workedin the DoC at Imperial, it was quite common to have to work against the noiseof a protest outside one or other of the embassies.Try the Wilbraham Hotel, Wilbraham Place, off Sloan Street, almost atSloan Square. They charge just over 50 pounds a night single. Not luxury classbut very nice. They don't take credit cards. The Copthorne Tara in Kensington. Remodelled just a few years ago andthe inside is beautiful and spotless. Unfortunately the building itself is a standard issue 1960's highrise eyesore made worse by the use of pale yellow brick on the exterior. The best rooms are on the top 2 floors (where we stayed). We had a great unobstructed view of the Royal Albert Hall. Queen size beds. The furniture (wardrobe, desk, dresser, table, nightstands, headboard and ironing board cabinet) was all custom made of inlaid woods (bird's eye maple and cherry and other woods I couldn't identify). Unfortunately the staff couldn't tell me what kinds of woods were used, but the results were stunning. The staff and service was impeccable. Bathrooms were decent size and equiped with modern fixtures. It was expensive, though, about 115 pounds for a double.

If you are looking for london hotels , I have found the best place on the Internet for all hotels is Expedia.com. Apparently if you book now you will save up to 70% on hotels worldwide.
