It might have made adifference in the way some of us made reservations. A lot of us in MPMLAwere/are planning to arrive early to assist in setup, if I'd known about theFriday/Saturday business, I might have made reservations for Friday. But whenthe hotel told me that the convention rate was no longer available forSaturday (and said nothing about Friday, of course), then it seemed onlylogical to settle for Sunday.Still unanswered: Why won't the hotel entertain (let alone honor) advancerequests regarding number of beds in rooms? Or, for that matter, requests fornon-smoking rooms? I for one will happily cancel if put in a smokingroom--I've never had to put up with such a high degree of uncooperativenessfrom any other accommodations, anywhere, ever (not even in Chernenko's USSR),and I'm really not about to start now.

When I was finalizing the credit check and deposit for the Riviera, I wanted to double-check the figures (I'll spare you the details). When we were renegotiating the amount to put down to deposit, they listed how much we requested for what, and had us down for $15,000 in chips. Not potato chips, not tortilla chips, but casino chips. las vegas hotel : That would not be OUR group (your registration fees are NOT going for casino chips!).However, Vegas *is* a big convention town, and lots of the conventions are pretty glitzy - almost more so than they are in other cities. I'd love to know which group is spending $15,000 on casino chips for its attendees.I've also had an interesting time with non-smoking arrangements (especially when booking hotels for 7 rooms for the board meetings). You do the best you can and talk nicely with the staff when you make reservations and when you arrive. A little Southern charm usually gains lots of returns...So, come to Las Vegas. Stay at the Riviera - if nothing else so you can do some slot-machine spotting - I wonder who our closet slot lovers are! I've heard some MLA members are working on their Blackjack skills... and keep an eye out for that other convention that could afford $15,000 in casino chips for their attendees!!!Cheers-laura<<<<<<< <***>>>>>>>>L aura Gayle GreenTreasurer/Executive Secretary, Music Library AssociationUniversity of Missouri-Kansas City, Miller Nichols Library5100 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, MO 64110voice: 816-235-1679; fax: 816-333-5584 las vegas hotel : -----Original Message-----From: Christine A Hoffman []Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 1:11 PMTo: Subject: Re: [MLA-L] Alternative Las Vegas hotel accommodationsAs one of your convention managers emeriti (-a? -ae? -uses?I never did study Latin), let me just add that the hotelreservation problems are not new to the Las Vegas meeting.Near as I could tell in the old days, the hotel salesstaff promises a lot of stuff to the convention manager, because the convention trade is, at least in most cities, their bread and butter. However, the promises about non-smokingrooms, early arrivals, third and fourth roomies on cots, what have you, often weren't clearly communicated to the reservationsagents, and they would tell you otherwise when you called. The upshot is: if you have a reservation issue, let your conventionmanager know immediately. That is the only person who cantie all the threads together and get MLA what it needs (sorry Gordon, but you know what I mean). Our requirements are quite unusual in the business: we'll take overThis stuff about having to charm someone to get a non-smoking room isludicrous. Whatever happened to customer service. I am appalled that inthis day and age of smoking awareness that a hotel could legally forcesomeone to take a smoking room. Well, if I have to settle for a smokingroom I will be causing the biggest ruckus they have ever seen until amanager lowers the rate considerably!! I am not one to sue, but it wouldcertainly be worth looking into in this case. las vegas hotel : David HurshHead Music LibrarianMusic LibraryAcademic Library ServicesEast Carolina UniversityGreenville, NC 27858(252) 328-1239-----Original Message-----From: Green, Laura Gayle []Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 2:38 PMTo: Subject: Re: [MLA-L] Alternative Las Vegas hotel accommodationsOn Christine Hoffman's heels, let me also share my perspective.
