hotels in rome : My friends and I really enjoyed the Hotel Colosseum on Via Sforza, just southwest of Santa Maria Maggiore. It's very quiet; the street also contains an elementary school and a bunch of government bureaucracy buildings. Cavour is the metro stop.I have been having a bit of trouble finding a hotel for a friend of minein Rome for the first week of September. I had made a reservation byphone with the Teatro di Pompei, but they phoned me back this morning tosay that for that week they would have to put us in an adjacentproperty, on the 2nd floor (3rd, American style) without an elevator.That would be all right for me, but my friend has recently had surgeryon her hip and it wouldn't be ideal for her. Also, at the same price(350,000 lire per night) it seems a bit much for a place without anelevator.I have tried several places in the Piazza Navona area (Santa Chiara, DueTorri) that I have seen recommended here, but they are full for all orpart of that week. (She will be there an entire week, and I will joinher for several days.) My favorite hotels are all a bit more basic thanwhat my friend is looking for, or have no elevators.

The criteria are: quietstreet, central location, elevator, near transport (so my friend doesn'thave to walk too much.) 350,000 lire was about the upper limit of whatwe had hoped to spend. Something cheaper would be even nicer. Airconditioning is not required if we can find a room with good aircirculation. Even the elevator wouldn't be required if we could findsomething with no more than one flight of steps, and where the receptionis on the ground floor. (The Arenula would be ideal except for that. Thereception is on the 1st (2nd) floor, and my friend, who is arrivingalone, wouldn't be able to carry her bags up to reception.)Hi Barbara, I too was looking for a small hotel in a central location inRome. The Hotel Oceania was recommended to me. They have only 16 rooms. Iemailed the owner and he replied promptly. After that I called him toconfirm reservations. He speaks fluent English and appears to be veryhelpful. I think the hotel is within your price range. But don't blame meif your not satisfied I have never been to Italy. I know nothing more thatwhat I told you. We are traveling blind. Sometimes that's the most fun. Hereis the hotels site. Only one page, and not very informative. Unfortunately, I am not able to find a decenthotel in my price range of ~ 60-70 $. Most of the hotels I came across were 150$ on average. But La Calcina is a terrific recommendation. It'smy preferred choice in Venice too--I've stayed there severaltimes.Almost every hotel is near some places and far from others. Thedifference is that some are closer to more places you want to gothan others are.
hotels in rome : The difference between the two hotels you recommend is thatalthogh La Calcina is off in Dorsoduro, on the "side" of Venice,Venice is small enough and Calcina is close enough that it onlytakes 10-15 minutes to get to the Piazza San Marco or the Rialto.The Via Capo d'Africa is farther from many of the sites peoplewant to see.But each to his own. We all have different likes and dislikes,styles of traveling, and so on. I'm certainly not trying topersuade you that what I prefer is what you should prefer, butjust trying to provide information to others to help them choose.Ultimately, none of us can choose for anyone else. People weighour words and make their own decisions.I too am looking for reasonable hotels in the three places mentioned.I'll be travelling in June and realise that the rates at that time ofyear for almost every hotel is extremely high. For example, I couldnot find a hotel in Venice that charges less than 100 euro per nightfor a double with bathroom. So I'm eager to know of any 'cheap' hotels in the three placesmentioned (took a look at Lancelot and it's beyond the 100 euro pernight budget), and located conveniently? Or am I asking for too much;)?
