hotels in barcelona : The Toldano (in the same building--different management--even cheaper, butdecent. Small rooms. Had to walk sideways. TV didn't have RaiUno, but thelocal wines (available from the supermarket on the other side of the streetacross the Ramblas) are so good that I didn't notice. Cheap! If goingback, I'll go to the Continental though. For the wallpaper.pretty central for Place Catalunya and Las Ramblasnice breakfastGraham(there was also an old thread with some suggestions...try putting barcelona and accomodation in a DejaNews search)How bad was the Grau? Unclean, security, or just "charmingly run-down"?I stayed there a couple of years ago. No problems with cleanliness, andI felt safe enough. They do have a guy on the door 24 hours a day. Mymain gripe was that while I had booked a double for single use, theyfailed to keep it for me, presumably preferring to take the few hundredextra pesetas for letting it to two people. The single was OK forsleeping in, but had no proper window, and I had to use a shared bog andshower. Somewhat perversely, given that Barcelona is a popular weekenddestination for Europeans, breakfast isn't available at weekends. Thisdid me a favour, since it forced me to find somewhere else for breakfast- a cheaper place on the Ramblas, where I ate my bun and drank my coffeefor the rest of my stay.
hotels in barcelona : Despite those moans, it is as good a combination of low price andconvenient situation as you're likely to find in Barcelona. The Hotel D' Arts in the Olympic village is very nice. 5 star with wonderfulviews of the city and/or the mediterranean.i am looking for good clean budget hotels in Barcelona and any other tipsfor travel there.thanksNick Juniper--SALEEBA ADAMS ARCHITECTS16 Churchill Ave. Subiaco 6008Ph. Everything you need for at least 2 days ofexploring is right there on foot. Then go to Montjuic, Parc Guell, SagradaFamilia, cathedrals, plazas, restaurants (try the Caracoles, eat Crema Catalanfor dessert) -- you won't lack for things to do. If you have time head south of the city to Sitges. One of the greatest beacheson the planet (according to ...Travel & Leisure, as I recall) and touristy tothe max. Or, even better - in my view: north to the little towns along the Costa Brava -my favorite is Tossa de Mar with its big crescent beach, the view and thecastle ruins. Stay at the Hotel Diana - designed by a student of Gaudi, andultra-cool - right on the beach. Ph: 34-972-34-1886. A train will take you toGerona and back to Barcelona, and you can rent a car to drive in to the coast. The drive and the views are spectacular. hotels in barcelona : We are considering a Renaissance Cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona this fall. The cruise package includes hotel stays in each of these cities. Doesanyone know which hotels they use for their passengers or are they likely tospread people around to several hotels, perhaps based on cabin class booked? We did this cruise in March. I remember that two of the hotels were the RitzCarlton and the Intercontinental, where we stayed. I think the hotels weregenerally assigned base on cabin, although it wasn't entirely clear. We hada category D cabin and we knew someone at the Ritz Carlton with a category Ccabin. Both hotels were nice although the Ritz Carlton was more centrallylocated to the downtown Barcelona area.I think you will have a great time if you go. We certainly did. Thanks for the info re: Barcelona Hotels. Do you remember where they putyou up in Lisbon? The hotels are allocated according to Category of stateroom, so you need to askRenaissance (or your agent), but they are unlikely to guarantee any particularhotel.Kevin Griffin--The Cruise People Ltd, London<>Isn't it High Time you were on the High Seas? hotels in barcelona : Renaissance will give you a truthful answer - because they are unbaised :)I can't speak for a "guarantee" but we are on the R2 out of Barcelona(to Lisbon) on July 10th and we have a document which states inspecific terms where we will be staying in each city. We knew thiswhen we booked the cruise, now almost 2 months ago. That's quite likely as you booked only three months or so before departure,.but the further out you are the less likely you'll get a guarantee. And Lori, some agents still book Renaissance, maybe not a lot in the States, but some.Remember in the UK deposits are non-refundable anyway so that's not a sellingproblem here.Kevin Griffin--The Cruise People Ltd, London<>Isn't it High Time you were on the High Seas?I may be mistaken on this, but I recall no cruise line "guarantees"the "free" hotel designation until final payment. For example, we have often been put up by Princess in Ft. Lauderdalefor the prior night stay (we live in the LA area) and we pretty muchtook what they gave us. As I recall, we found out where we were staying (usually at theSheraton at the airport) when we got final papers. hotels in barcelona : On Renaissance, we're at the Melia Hotel in Barcelona and the Tivoliin Lisbon. I understand they are pretty good places to stay. And,we're priced in Cat. G which is nothing special. We took the Renaissance Two from Barcelona to Lisbon on the May 31, 1999sailing and stayed at the Hotel Barcelo Sants and the Sheraton Lisbonwith our category D booking. Both hotels were excellent. Underneaththe Sants is a level with shops, cafeteria fast food, money exchangestore fronts, vending machines, public telephones, and a policesubstation. The next level is their Metro system. The hotel coffee shopserves a buffet breakfast. The money exchange stores have better rates, especially for travelers' checks better than cash! Be careful inBarcelona. One fellow passenger was mugged and lost a substantial sumof money a few blocks from the hotel. We had to push away some gypsieswho tried to surround us, as we were forewarned about them by varioussources. We were scammed out of $360 because no one warned us aboutthis common scam. The cruise line personnel did not appear interestedin forewarning its passengers after we reported our unfortunate incidentwhich we have now posted on Deja.com and can be accessed through "travelscam Barcelona". Let us know if Renaissance warns you about phony copsallegedly checking for counterfeit money. Once a person knows that thisis a scam, they won't become easy victims. There are 3 shopping malls in Lisbon within one, and 4 blocks of theSheraton. Money exchange is better at the hotel with only a 2%commission whereas one bank wanted a flat $10 fee just to exchange $40US while another bank wanted about $8.50. Need local currency to shop, especially where they don't accept Visa or other credit cards. Coupleof flea market outlets wanted to take advantage of tourists by quotingprice in US that was twice the actual price. We saw a purse for 2500escudos (about $12.50 US) and when we asked how much in US they wanted$25! We said too much. Then they said $23. End of discussion. If yougo to O'Campos restaurant (a couple of blocks from the Sheraton where wesaw several fellow passengers), they will bring out a large platter ofprawns and a large slice of cheese. Tell them to take it back if youdon't want this, because you will be charge $14 US for the prawns (don'trecall how much for the cheese that we did not touch). Also the bunswill cost. The entrees were plentiful. We could not finish. Take aheadset guided tour on the blue bus line. Flat fee (about $10 US) goodall day on surface transportation. At Gibraltar, we were unable to sign up for the excursion but ended upgetting a better deal because the taxis and vans outside the terminalwill take passengers @ $25 per person to the same places. They fill upeach vehicle with 4 to 6 passengers before departing. The Renaissance brochure recommends a $15 per person per day gratuityfor the waiter. Obviously this is too much, as they only asked for $9in the ship disembarkation announcement.
