hotels com : I booked a hotel room in Chicago a few months ago through Travelocity, butwhen it was charged to my credit card the payee was hotels.com.Travelocity did let me know there would be a penalty for cancellation. Don'tremember how much though.The following is a cut and paste from my most recent reservation withHotels.com. I have deleted the information that nobody but myself needs toknow, but I would say the Hotels.com is pretty up front about theircancellation fee.Congratulations! But the long-running marriage between U.S. airlines and hotels has takenan unlikely turn since Sept. 11, with share prices in the two sectorstaking sharply different paths amid one of the worst-ever downturns foreither industry. Following years of profits in the go-go 1990s, nearly every majorairline and hotelier lost money in the fourth quarter of 2001. Companiesin both industries laid off thousands and took huge charges in the faceof a travel crisis sparked by the Sept. 11 attacks on the World TradeCenter and Pentagon (news - web sites). But while airlines continued to chalk up billions of dollars in lossesin the first quarter, most hotels reported a rapid return toprofitability that surprised even the most optimistic industry watchers.

They also noted an uneven recovery in thenation's travel sector that has seen tourists return to the road morequickly than business travelers. "The difference lies in their expense structure," said Goldman Sachsanalyst Steve Kent. "Hotels can shut down full floors and still operateat a lower capacity level very effectively, whereas an airline has tofly no matter what and will price to fill the plane to the point whereit may or may not be the most cost efficient."

Airlines slashed schedules by up to 20 percent and laid off thousands ofworkers, following the unprecedented closure of all U.S. airports fordays while security measures were beefed up. Hotels also laid off thousands and closed down entire buildings that hadgone as much as 50 percent empty during the initial weeks of the ensuingtravel crisis. Likewise, cruise lines cut berth prices and overhauled itineraries. Twosmall operators, Renaissance Cruises and American Classic Voyages, endedup in bankruptcy. But as the post-attack shock has faded, leisure travelers have been muchfaster to return to the road, helping hotels and cruise operatorsrecover more quickly than the airlines, said Jason Ader, an analyst atBear Stearns. The return of leisure travelers is evident at Southwest Airlines (news -web sites) , one of the few carriers that caters to discount-mindedtourists and the only major one in its group to report a profitthroughout the post-Sept. 11 travel crisis. Hotels in resort destinations have also been faster to recover than onesin major urban centers that depend mostly on business travelers,analysts said.

It had been down as much 15.4 percent in the weeks afterSept. 11. The improvement emboldened at least one major hotel operator, StarwoodHotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. to announce a first-everacross-the-board 5 percent increase in room rates for all its brands,including Westin and Sheraton. The divergent outlooks for hotels and airlines have also shown up onWall Street, where many hotel stocks are now trading at or near 52-weekhighs after initially dropping as much as 30 percent after Sept. 11.
