I assume I need a plug adaptor --any suggested sources? Will my modem work? Are RJ-11 phone socketsused in the hotel rooms? Are there likely to be any customs hassles,any required paperwork? Yes. But they are sending them by post, so be patient. Took mineabout three weeks or so to come back after I faxed it to them. I've been waiting until Erik's gopher reference goes live, thenplanning on scanning it and adding whatever else I can think of in thisarea (I spend a lot of my life travelling to strange places with alaptop, and Amsterdam is *not* strange). hotel reservations : If you don't care about grounding, Radio Shack and most departmentstores. You are looking for a doo-dad with two round pins, but makesure you get the "standard European" one, since there are some withdifferent pin sizes and/or spacing. If you don't find one before you goover, these adaptors tend to be readily available, at only slightlyridiculous prices, at airport electronics shops (and you haven't seenairport shops until you see Schiphol). Most European hotels also keepsome adaptors (and voltage converters) on hand for silly tourists, butthe number of us probably exceeds expectations of supply. If you do care about grounding, you don't want a plug adaptor but acord that has a "European" plug at one end (look for a round-ish shell,with round metal pins in the middle and strips of metal running parallelto the pins at the top and bottom of the shell) and the EIAthree-parallel-flat-pin thing that fits most computers and voltage-adjusting charger/ adaptors at the other. They are hard to find in theUS, but some computer accessory stores do carry them, although atpremium prices.
hotel reservations : Yes, as long as you stay at or above 2400 baud or switch it to"CCITT" (as distinct from "Bell") at the lower speeds. But you betterfigure out who you are calling. Note, e.g., that international callsfrom hotels in Europe tend to involve costly surprises and that the"dial the US using our operators" services offered by AT&T, MCI, Sprint,et al involve people who sometimes can't seem to stay off the line longenough to transmit a fax, much less carry on an interactive session,etc. If it works, the odds that it is legal are low, but you need to checkwith the local arrangements folks on that and then decide how much youcare. In general, European phones are either hard-wired (still) or usesockets that differ from country to country and sometimes by regionswithin countries. hotel reservations : Indeed, calling from Europe is more expensive than the other way around.Hotels add to that even more, so watch out!Officially, all phone stuff should be approved. That is the official story;I know a lot of places where genuine USA modems work. You might want tocheck if your modem can dial blind (our dial tone is different), andif it supports pulse dialling (the phone company usualy has DTMF thesedays, but a hotel switch may not). I think you get away with connectingyour modem. You might expect less performance because of the mismatchingbetween modem and phone line impedance.Powerbooks are fine with 240 volts - all you need is one of those us to anywhere adaptors you can find in any electrical shop or airport.AS for phone connections- you may be lucky and be able to find an RJ-11being used by the phone itself; this is not too likely. Otherwise, a spare phone cable, some croc-clips, and a screwdriver will see you throughjust about anything. As for customs hassles- there shouldn't be any problem if the device is for re-export. I've taken mine into and out of England many times, and neverhad any problem.
hotel reservations : Simon is correct as far as he goes here. The worst hassle I've had is not fromcustoms, but from the inspection teams. In some airports they have lists ofmachines and they really want to find your model # on that list. If it isn'tthere you can be delayed while they check it out with someone higher up. (No, Idon't know why they have lists or what information the lists contain. The factthat these are dead-serious security types, plus the fact that our only sharedlinguistic territory wasn't very large, kinda dissuaded me from asking anypointed questions about what was going on.)I happened to have a DEC PC laptop of fairly recent vintage with me on a recenttrip through Europe and I got delayed a couple of times for 15-30 minutes. Itis the first time I recall being penalized for keeping my hardware up to date;usually it is the other way around ;-)I have run into this in Frankfurt. Having a greater linguistic overlap withthem, I asked why they had lists and what they contain. The lists containaccurate weights and chemical composition information for the components. Whatthey sometimes do is to weigh the unit to check for possible explosivesinside. The reason is that even working portables could have explosivesstuffed in empty spaces inside (no, there aren't many, but then again, notmuch explosive is required to do serious damage either). For items not on thelist, they can run a high power vacuuming unit over it and feed the particlesthus collected into a mass spectrometer. This is tied to a computer that givesan indication of whether or not such a molecular distribution could havearisen from known explosives. I have had this done to me because of a videocamera that was not yet commonly available and thus not on the list. If theresult of any of these tests is positive, you may expect major delays whilethey check you out. Most people cooperate fully and quietly; loaded submachineguns pointed directly at them causes most people to be quite cooperative....
