hotel rates : to: Newsgroups: misc.consumers.frugal-livingSubject: Re: Hotel Rates *sigh*DRL> I generally refuse to stay in Motel 6s.DRL> They're just too skanky for my tastesHuh? I've stayed at several M-6s.Hardly deluxe (and *always* cheap), but "skanky"???___ * SLMR 2.1a * Idiot proof? No, that presumes a finite number of idiots.Depends on which one. I've found Motel 6's to be, shall we say, uneven? Someare perfectly fine. One of them was infested with ants. One had a noisy,non-working air-conditioner (can't remember which - this was back in '89 - allI remember is a sleepless night) which was really necessary given that it waslate August in Madison, WI - very humid. And the quality seems to have nothingto do with the price. There's a wonderful Motel 6 at San Simeon, for those ofyou who have a hankering to "do" Hearst Castle. So, yes, I would say that some Motel 6's are "skanky." And my standards are pretty low. What about B&Bs for those looking for less expensive accomodations?I stayed a week in New Iberia LA on business last year for $35 a night, ina very nice restored home in the historic district. The room was plush, with antique furnishings, private bath and a cooked to order breakfast. That $35 included hotel tax. I spent another week in East Texas onbusiness this spring for $45 a night, again this included tax and a greatbreakfast. I've paid as much as $75 in cities, but when you figurebreakfast and tax, this is still a good price, and I prefer the 'homey'atmosphere to a sterile motel room any day.

hotel rates : Many B&B's have vacancies during the week. Most offer discounted ratesfor business travelers. To locate a B&B, inquire at the chamber ofcommerce in town, or check the tourist bureaus. This is true in some cities, not in others - e.g., in Cape May NJ theB&B's are the most expensive place to stay - but in Seattle I stayed at afantastic B&B (The Pensione Nichols - I recommend it highly) right by thePike Place Mkt for only $50/night which had great coffee in the morningand interesting people staying there to talk to, great view of PugetSound, etc. LisaThere is no reason to be embarrassed about asking for Best Rate.Every hotel has it, and tell your spouse that this is comingfrom someone who writes for hotel trade papers for a living. I believe the last Conde Nast "Traveller" has a whole section ongetting the best hotel rates. I have found that last-minute ratesare great - i.e., if you happen to be in the city or town and sayyou will be there in half an hour or so, you can get a betterrate. Also try consolidators: I know there are a number in theU.S. - in Canada we also tend to call Chambers of Commerce andask for help with hotel rates.

hotel rates : I hesitate to even mention this here, as I have no proof. So, Iwill saythat I have heard and am in no way endorsing this as true, because Idonot personally know it to be so, that the reason the NFB is able to getsuch unbelievably favorable rates is that when they sign up to gosomewhere they not only guarantee that there will be sch and such anumber of people coming to the hotel, they back that up with some sortof cash advance payment. I say again, Ido not know this to be true frompersonal knowledge. I heard it last year in the context of wonderingwhy, now that ACB has gone to the multi-year negotiations instead of thezoo that we used to have, we're not getting anything even remotely closeto the rates NFB gets. The answer Igot is the cash payment story. True?Who knows. Onething's for sre. A call to the NFB national office isn'tgoing to elicit an affirmative response, regardless of whether thestatement is true.--Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!261 !1055.0!Mary.OttenInternet: From: ()Subject: Hotel Rates Newsgroups: Date: 1991-06-28 15:07:09 PST Index Number: 16550WW> I've been sitting back watching this thread, waiting for WW> some definitive statements, but so far, nobody has come up WW> with any! That is, nobody said that convention groups don't WW> get special rates, and I assume that is because everybody WW> knows that, but Walter asserted that the NFB got better rates WW> than the others due to the fact they represent a group of WW> blind conventioneers! I don't know what he is basing this WW> upon, but for sure, if we are talking better rates than WW> similarly sized groups, and I am sure similarly qualified rate WW> negotiators, I can understand his conclusion.

hotel rates : WW> WALTER, you got any numbers to go with your claim or any WW> other supportive evidence? Frankly, I am amazed if a hotel WW> will give special rates to blind people, and if anything, WW> would expect the opposite due to what I would guess them to WW> assume to be higher costs on their end, but yes, if what you WW> say is true, we can add it to the growing list of WW> incongruities many of us see in the NFB!Willie, It strikes me that this is just another example of Walter, and others, looking for things to give the NFB grief over. I have sat in Dr. Jernigan'soffice over the past few months, while he has talked to Hotels. He has, in toway used blindness as a way of extracting special hotel rates. It isconceivable, but not likely, that a Hotel might give us a special rate. It ismuch less likely that they would do it a second time. So, why do we keep getinvited back to places where we have been, at still low rates?I consider this topic just another example of gratuitouss hassling of the NFB.Why is it that ACB members and sympathesizers here seem to spend a good deal oftime attacking us. If they are right, and we are wrong, then they shouldtriumph in the end and shouldn't have to spend so much time putting us down. You don't see us doing that. I think that a major element of the ACB is itsoposition to the NFB. You take that away and there isn't much.If you read the Braille Monitor and the Braille Forum ten years ago, the attackson the other side, by both were numerous and uuncalled for in my opinion. I seemuch less of this today, although more so in the Forum. The January-Februaryissue for example, had two articles that were veehemently anti-NFB.We do invite criticism at times, because we take strong positions. However, some people might want to examine their motivations in what they say and howthey say it. Some people are living in the past. Things are changing.

No, this isn't a put upjob for those of you who always believe that Willie and I act in concert.Anyhow... What's with this Misguided? What in hell is misguided aboutsomeone who shows what might be the last vestige of human feeling by notmugging a handicapped individual? It used to be we treated women withdeference, old people with forebearance and provided aid when needed--thesewere the ideals anyway--how we were supposed to act. Now, we're supposedto substitute a "screw-'em-all" attitude? For what? So we can all pretendthat we're equal because we're all at the mercy of conditions which Hobbesdescribed as "nasty, brutish, and short"? Btw, for those who avoided Tom'spoint about rape, it was right on target. His question has it right, arewe so bound up with this issue that we have come to ask about mugging, rape, or theft, or even murder in terms of civil rights? Damn, I can hearit now. "Kill me, oh, please kill me! I'm blind and just as good asanyone else. You can do your bit to help promote the handicapped by justkilling me." <evil grin> Of course, the next step is to murder, rob, orrape, to prove equality. Of course, in doing so, we couldn't just prey onthe non-handicapped world, now, could we?
