hotel paris : around place denfert rochereau there is virtually no tourist traffic.the only site being the catacombs, it keeps short hours, and is closedat night.why do I go there? I'm a dual national, my family lives in theneighborhood.full of locals, a couple of parks, a cemeterie, a market steet, and thecatacombs under the square. there are several moderately priced hotels in thearea, the fanciest being a *** named l'Hotel du Midi (a business class hotel, dataport at the desk, cable w/CNN) where I've been staying on and off for 38years. around place denfert rochereau there is virtually no tourist traffic. the only site being the catacombs, it keeps short hours, and is closed atnight. why do I go there? I'm a dual national, my family lives in theneighborhood.Okay Jean, you've convinced ME. It sounds great. You've told us everythingabout the place except one thing -- the price!with bath about 600FF (these days about 100$), rooms with very niceshowers (a shower is a douche, so a chambre avec douche is one with ashower...they're not talking about a bidet) are cheaper.it caters to french business travelers (hence the dataport at the desk)and the best way to make reservations or inquiries (especially if youdon't speak french) is the fax.
hotel paris : there's a picture of the square on my "playpage" below. For a nice stay in Paris try the Hotel Les Jardins D'Eiffel at 8,Rue Ameliewhich is between Rue Grenelle & Rue St. Dominique in the heart of the 7th. Itis on a one block street thats almost too small for two way traffic so its veryquiet. It will run between $125-150 US a day for a couple. We stay theresometimes when the apartment we rent is unavailable or our backup hotel is full. Ask for a room with a view of the Eiffel Tower absolutly breathtaking atnight, very good breakfasts at the hotel, efficent room service and a TV cablewith CNN & the UK channels.Even their bedlights have ample wattage. Try Thoumieux for a wonderful Bistro & inexpensive at 79 r.St-Dominique (ordertheir salade with ham & poched egg over frise lettuce) or La Fontaine de Marsat 129 r St-Dominique also moderately priced (they do a Bresse chicken insauce, wow)Hotel tele 47.05.46.21 Fax 45.55.Michael Schneider San Francisco,CADAS From: ()Subject: Re: Help Hotel Paris Newsgroups: Date: 1998/01/15 Michael:My wife and I will be visiting Paris for the first time this summer. Arethe rates at the Hotel Les Jardins D'Eiffel higher this time of year? Wehave been working with a travel agent in Portland, OR, but are not sureshe knows much about Paris. We don't get much more information thanwhether the hotel is a 2-star or 3-star from her. This doesn't help usmuch. Her recommendation was the Hotel Queen Mary at $299 U.S.. Do wereally have to spend that much money for a nice hotel? hotel paris : NO! The "expensive Paris" is a myth. Paris may be enjoyed veryreasonably, giving up only the English-speaking staff and overly largerooms. There is no reason to spend more than $100 per night unless youenjoy spending your time in the hotel. We never spend more than 450ffand go almost every year. Choose by location and your interests. DOget a reservation if you'll be there in June. Later, of course, mostParisians leave town and you'll have the place to yourself (oh yes:ignore the billions of other tourists). I recommend Cheap Sleeps: Parisfrom Sandra Gustafson. It isn't about hostels (though she lists thosetoo). It's about quality, inexpensive accommodations for those of uswho'd rather travel "closer to the ground" and stay longer. Enjoy. billLast winter my wife and I stayed at Les Jardins D'Eiffel, on 8 RueAmelie, 7th Arr. It was our first trip to Paris, and we loved it.It is a pleasant 3 star in a quiet residential neighborhood. Pleasantstaff, the front desk personnel spoke at least 3 languages that Iheard (French, English, and German!), rather fluently even. The roomwe had was small and cozy, with TV, mini-fridge, mini-bar, bath, plenty of heat (it was bitter cold when we visited). Breakfast (alight one with plenty of cafe) was served in a room just off of thelobby, with a view of the courtyard and Tower. We enjoyed our staythere very much. The Tour Eiffel was visible from our room'scourtyard (quiet) window. The Marche Rue Cler is just a couple ofshort blocks away, we did our lunch and snack shopping there in themornings. We rode the metro quickly and efficiently to all parts ofParis from the Latour-Maubourg station, also just a couple of shortblocks away. We used public transportation from Orly (Orlybus toDenfert-Rochereau Metro station, metro to Latour-Maubourg) and had notrouble getting around. If you feel lost at times, and turned aroundin circles (the metro did that to me the whole time) just ask around, someone will send you off in the right direction! It helped that wepacked light, one carry on per person was our only luggage. Who needsa taxi with their terrific public transportation system! hotel paris : We made our reservations through our local travel agent, who usedAvanti Destinations (located in Portland!) to arrange for our traveland our hotel reservations. We liked the prices and the quality somuch that we have booked a return to the same hotel this Spring.Abotel (a chain of hotels that this hotel belongs to) has a websiteat:and you can see what their rates are for different sizes of rooms anddifferent seasons. I believe that Avanti was able to get much betterrates than those published on the website.Rich=================================Ric h Traulsenemail: telephone: (509)335-8526Instructional Support ServicesWashington State UniversityPullman, WA 99164-5604============================== ===Go get yourself a copy of "Cheap Sleeps in Paris". It is a purple book. Indispensable when it comes to Paris hotels. Then just make your own res,or give the number to the agent and have them do it. I looked at about 30different books and found this the most helpful. I did a search inDejanews once on a few different things including the book and lots ofpeople have highly reccommended it over the past year...Good luck, and no...you don't have to pay $300 for a nice Paris hotel.-- hotel paris : Can anybody tell me whether they would recommend this hotel? thanks inadvanceIf you want hotels in Paris reviewed by people and me, that haveactually stayed in this hotel log on Personally i stayed there 4 years ago and this is what you can readabout in my "Paris hotels 1st-9th arr" section in my site:"Hotel Familia, 11 rue des Ecoles tel 0143545527 fax 0143296177Comfortable, agreeable hotel with an excellent ratio quality/price.Very friendly reception.
