hotel mnchen : I wouldn't recommend more than one night train a week because (especiallyif you're a clean-freak like most Americans), you do feel a little in needof a shower. A lot of times you get into a city very early (i.e., 6 or 7am) which can be good if you don't have accomodations booked yet or wantto check your luggage and take an early morning stroll through town beforeembarking on heavy-duty sightseeing. It can also be disadvantage if youneed to change money since you'll probably have to wait at least an hourbefore anything opens. The other thing to consider is border crossings. I remember that theFrench and Italian conductors always took my passport upon boarding(perhaps for safety reasons?). On this recent train from Budapest toKrakow, I was awakened four times for border crossings (including fillingout a form at 4 am about how much money I would be bringing into Poland --as if I could think clearly at that hour!). So night trains may not bethe best night's sleep. And you will miss lots of beautiful scenery (Iregret never seeing the French countryside and missing the Tatramountains). But they certainly do save money and, if you're covering alot of distance in your travels anyway, a lot of time.

Back in '89 I was over in Europe(and Egypt) for 95 days ... 42 nights of which I slept on trainsincluding two 5 nighters in a row ... one of which was Uberlingen inthen W.Germany to Paris (with a pause for getting strip searched inSwitzerland for no reason) to Kopenhagen to Oslo back to Kopenhagenthen to Bacharach in Germany again (all 8hr trips)... pretty close towhere I started. It's a little intense but you got to see a lot ofterritory w/o wasting time travelling in the day (although I diddo a day trip through the Alps for the view) or money onaccomadations. I was quite ready to go home after 3 months ofthis but it was a helluvalot of fun ... only real problem wasnear Carcasonne France where somebody stole my camera, razor,toothbrush, chocolate (what kind of lowlife steals another man'schocolate ... at least it wasn't German chocolate), soap, etc.Fortunately they took the stuff out of the bag cause they left myfilm, diaries, etc. (about day 85)One hint for riding trains ... do as I saw some kid in France do ..bring a ghetto blaster on board and play it load when you go intoa compartment ... no one will follow (well I did, cause I figuredout what was up) and when the train gets moving turn the tunes down... voila ... an empty, peaceful compartment. No blaster? ... just do a lot of weird chanting (although you mayend up bunking with a bunch of cult members)

Horror story: On a night train from Bern, Switzerland to Venice, Italy Ifound myself be woken at all hours of the night. First by an Italianfamily who wanted me to go to another compartment (NOT!) and later by athief. I was later warned that thiefs often hop on the train at one stop,rob the passangers, and get off at the next stop. There you have it. You've also been warned. So have a great time, but watch your belongings(bring a lock)...Chad MedcroftI don't know about London to Frankfurt, but I did manage to do thisFAIRLY successfully this summer from Paris to Hannover and from Berlinto Munich. Both of these are fairly long legs so there was enough timefor a decent sleep. There were a couple of glitches. In Paris, we boardeda train with a wonderful sleeping compartment that we had reserved whilestill at home when we booked our Eurail passes. The conductor, who spokesome English, said he'd wake us up 30 minutes before we arrived in Hannoverso we'd be ready to get off. Instead, he woke us up about 5 minutes beforeand as we scurried into clothes & shoes he shooed us off where we satstunned and gathering our wits while the train sat at the station for another30 minutes or so. A rather jolting beginning (and chilly at 5 a.m.)to our visit to a very lovely city. We hadn't been able to make sleeperreservations for the Munich trip from home, so made them at the Zoo stationin Berlin. It didn't cost much at all in comparison which should havemade me suspicious. Actually, I demonstrated quite clearly that I wantedbeds and was assured strongly that I would have them. But no. We sleptin regular train seats. And, surprisingly, we slept very well (it hadbeen a very VERY busy day) and woke in Munich well rested (all of us, me,my 11-year-old daughter and 75-year-old mother) and ready to party whichMunich certainly afforded us the opportunity to do. In any case, it was wellworth the extra time in 2 cities we wouldn't have had time for.
hotel mnchen : Now that I've reached the ripe old age of 36, I think the only way to do it isto have a couchette; sleeping in seats is for the <25 yr olds! Real sleepers areeven better.BUT it can be extremely comfortable. In 1986 I had a sleeper from WBerlin toMnchen. The train had come from Moscow and so was a Russian train. I had my owncompartment. Of course I had to pay for it but I remember it was veryreasonable, about third of the cost of the hotel I'd stayed in the previousnight, which I thought had been very cheap. Another trip (1981) I did was from Milano to Paris in a four (or was it six)person cabin. The train was half empty so my companion and I had the cabin toourselves.On both trips I surrendered my passport to the conductor and slept through theborder crossing, even on the Berlin-Mnchen trip when the Wall was still there.I've also slept from Basel to Bonn (OK), Vienna to Venice (OK +1) and Mnchen toBerlin in a seat (OK just).The horror story:We went from Bologna to Brindisi (sounds a bit like Boulder to Birmingham don'tit?).The train was supposed to leave Bologna at 0:15 (I think). It pulled inabout 0:45 full to the brim with the Italian army. We managed to get on anywayand sat on our bags from Bologna to a town an hour north of Brindisi. We shouldhave forgotten aboutb that trip and stayed in Bologna, but then I wouldn't havea story to tell you now would I?
