grand hotel : Sundays, 3 to 6 pm on KDHX, FM88 "Will there still be room for me In the 21st century?" -- New Golden Rocket They're my opinions and you can't have them. So there.Grand Hotel had closed by then, but the company was determined to make the CD. Two weeks into recording, David Carrol, who was the original Baron, died of AIDS. To hear Carrol you have to listen to the last track on the CD, which is a live cabaret version of "Love Can't Happen" that is just amazing. (He also had an extensive career and can be heard on many other recordings.) I just recently borrowed the CD for "Grand Hotel" from the local library and while looking through the liner notes noticed that tthe cast album was recorded on April 2, 1992. Now my question is, was "Grand Hotel" still at the Martin Beck Theatre then? grand hotel : I feel the same about David Carroll -- not personally, never methim. I never heard him in person either. But his voice, onrecords, captivated me. I love his performance on the Girl Crazyalbum and that rendition of "Love Can't Happen" at the end of theGrand Hotel recordings knocks my socks off each time I hear it.What a tragedy to lose him so young. If there are more tapes ofhis cabaret performances floating around out there, I wish someonewould release them.I had never even heard that David was sick. I saw him on Broadway in Chessand he was absolutely fantastic. Michael Jeter went to "Evening Shade", David Carrollwas by then very ill from AIDS, and I'm not sure of the rest.The recording date was moved up to accommodate Carroll, but hecollapsed during the recording session and died shortly after.The show went on tour in '92 or '93, with Brent Barrett (I sawthis tour--Brent was *great!*), then moved on to London, whereit closed after about a month. (AT THE GRAND is in the chapter "Don'tLet This Happen To You")I know they ended up recording the whole thing in one day with BrentBarrett replacing David Carroll (although there is a touching tributeto Carroll on the CD and a picture of him in the liner notes).Note that W&F's lyrics have been restored for the recording (e.g., inthe show it's "What She Needs", on the recording it's "What YouNeed"). Certainly, something interesting has happened when the Bsection of the song has a different title than the A section of thesame song. ("At the Grand Hotel/Table with a View") This might justreflect the fractured structure of the show though.I have no idea if they were still at the Martin Beck when they did therecording. If it means anything, the picture at the back cover of theliner notes is of the Martin Beck set. I forwarded your post to Bob and Chet (Forrest and Wright) and they had quite a chuckle over your comments. I guess you are lucky they are wonderful men or I suspect that you might be needing a lawyer.Bob and Chet brought the Grand Hotel project to Tommy Tune. They owned the project. Tommy as the director, in fact even the producers could not "dismiss" Bob and Chet because they are members of the Dramatist Guild. What happened was that Tommy wanted new material and Bob and Chet agreed to bring in Yeston for additional material because they could not write as fast as Tommy needed it. (They are both quite old).
