Allmajor credit card companies specifically forbid the businesses whichcarry them to add an overhead for credit card use. If you tell yourcredit card company that Hotel X has charged you a Y% overhead for theircredit card use, they will withdraw the right to accept their creditcard to that hotel and, I think (but I'm not 100% sure), reimburse youfor the "illegal" expense you had.This may be the case in Switzerland, but it is not the case elsewhere.English (and I suspect EU) law specifically regards the enforcement ofsuch a provision as "anti-competitive", and it is illegal for a creditcard company to insist that businesses charge the same for credit cardsas for cash. In practice, in the UK at least, it is quite rare forcompanies to levy a charge for credit card use. The most likely place tofind such a charge - particularly germane to this group! - is in atravel agency.

french hotels : For the first time in our experience in traveling to France several hotelsare requiring demi-pension in order to stay there. This is the case even incities where there are plenty of excellent restaurants (read Michelin starredrestaurants). I thought that requiring demi-pension was illegal in France. "Pension complète"means both meals.Demi-pension means you take BREAKFAST and one main meal at the hotel,usually DINNER in the evening.IIRC, hotels can't require you to take their breakfast, but all but the"cheapest" people do eat breakfast at their hotel - not cheap, butbreakfast is getting larger each year.
french hotels : I know we've received calls from Europe, but I also know those callers said they had tried all day long and only after many attempts did they get through. I suspect the hotels in question had much less of a sense of urgency in reaching you than personal friends did in reaching us.Once again I suspect this is a matter or priorities. They just gave up and figured it will all be easier later on. There are really too many unknowns for me to offer a valid opinion on your hotels and I don't even remember how far away (in time) you were seeking reservations. There are so many possible explanations. They may worry about accepting reservations from the US and worry about last minute cancellations from jittery Americans. I have little experience with Italian hotels, but I've had some really peculiar responses from owners of small French hotels over the years. One hotel owner acknowledged that he ignored my reservation request because it came faxed on my travel agent's letterhead. He didn't pay commissions and didn't deal with travel agents. No one asked for a commission. No one expected a commission. The transaction would be direct and by credit card. It was off season. We arrived in the town without reservations and found it easy to get a room. The hotel in question had rooms, but we choose to stay elsewhere. No application to your problem other than to note that small hotel owners can be peculiar about how they act.
