We have the choice of accommodation in the centre of town and would like any feedback anyone would have on the following hotels: Melvin House Hotel, Rothesay Terrace Carlton Highland Hotel, North Bridge Old Waverley Hotel, Princes Street Maitland Hotel, Shandwich Place Stakis Edinburgh Grosvenor, Grosvenor Street, Channings, South Learmonth Gardens, Royal Circus Hotel, Royal CircusWe are hoping for accommodation within walking distance of the Castle, and something with a lot of character. These hotels are some that are offered as part of a "last minute" Hotel Pass programme from Canada (i.e. we can only book a day ahead if they have any availability) on a good rate (CDN$ 166 or UK# 70 for two people including breakfast).Cathy in Calgary(replace nospam with adinfinitum in email address for return email)Very central location, some rooms may be a bit noisy. Moreover, they are likely to host large groups (of whichI'm not normally very fond).I can't help you with any of the hotels in your list, but I can recommend an absolutely wonderful B&B in a Georgian row house in the Stockbridge area of the "New Town." It's referred to simply as Number 7 Danube Street. You can't see the castle from it, but it's only a 10-minute walk to the Princes Street Gardens below the castle.
edinburgh hotels : We stayed there for three nights in June 1996 and loved it. As you'll see from the website, the rooms are lovely, especially the one with the queen-size bed that looks out on the private garden in back. Full of thoughtful extras. Fiona has a supply of local restaurant menus and will gladly make dinner reservations for you. Her breakfasts aregood and plentiful.I can't say enough good things about her B&B. It's 80 pounds a night for two people, and well worth it -- much better than staying in a large, impersonal hotel. edinburgh hotels : DOZENS of Edinburgh hotels are set to benefit from the creation of a new online service just weeks after the idea was dreamed up. The website - - has been set up by the Edinburgh Principal Hotels Association, the Edinburgh and Lothians Tourist Board and online booking company All-Hotels, whose chief executive is Jane Karwoski. The site will launch on Tuesday. It will allow visitors to choose and book from over 40 hotels in the capital. The fully illustrated site will also offer details on the facilities in each room, as well as the ability to make and pay for bookings online. Simon Williams, chairman of the Edinburgh Principal Hotels Association, said: "This proposal has been welcomed by all our EPHA members who have been actively involved throughout. More than 30 members are already receiving training and advice from All-Hotels, with many of them looking forward to embracing the internet for the first time. "The project was initially discussed about six weeks ago and we have funded the entire venture with our own annual development budget, generated by subscription, and we are very pleased with the results so far."
