delta hotels : Apparently the Delta hotels did very little business during the summerwhen Canadians don't take vacations for the most part. I was planning to go to the Santiaga de CubaDelta, Sierra Mar, in April. Where did you get your info and does this haveanything to do with the Helms/Burton thing in the US? I have noticed thatthe Delta company has gone out of its way to keep the Cuban Delta Hotelsoff of the Delta web Site.I'm sure if they are booking you into Sierre Mar it will still be open. In fact, it is kind of fun being one of the last guests in a hotel, sinceeverybody will be a little looser.I get the impression that this is a Cuban move, because they don't thinkDelta is making enough money for them. delta hotels : The local papers (Toronto) are still advertising .. through to the end ofApril.... Sierra Mar, with Canadian Holidays and Alba Tours.And they aren't doing business or "trafficking" in any questionable properties.Thanks for the Info, it was very helpful. I recieved an e-mail reply to aninquiry to the Delta Hotels. According to the REP from Delta they are no longer involved with theSantiago de Cuba Delta as of April 1 1997. They, in his words, will beconcentrating on the 4- star resorts in the Holguin Province.Thanks again, it saved us from having a potential problem had we bookedunder false pretences.PaulDavid, I don't know what you mean by "being stripped" or "retain".I know Sierra Mar was closed for 9 months for renovations.. thenre-opened. Fewer tour operators were doing that region.... I haven't seen anything about it in the business pages of thepapers... tomorow, maybe something might be in the Travel sections. Idon't know what you mean... did they leave because they weren't makinga profit, or were they asked to go? Where do you get yourinformation? I'm not questioning your veracity... just curious.
delta hotels : (I was told by someone working at Sierra Mar that a new manager firedall the blacks, except for a couple of animators... I hoped it wasn'ttrue).I just read the other day that they were leaving because of the hotelsnot being profitable any more. Maybe there is more than that....Thank you , Oscar. I did some investigating today and yesterday. Theinformation that I have is that Delta left... because they can't make a profit.I think they are not alone... it is because of the rigid, idiotic 'sistema' inCuba... where nothing is as it seems, and "business deals" turn on whims... government whims.... and as soon as a company actually starts to make a"profit'... then well , that's just no communistically correct.Basically..... from my source....it just don't "vale la pena" to even attempt todo business in Cuba...Delta, Regent Holidays, Air Canada.... some (not all) of the big tour operators,and tourism companies... they realize that there are lots of otherdestinations.. and Cuba.... well... if you try to *reward* your best employees,if you try to renovate (Sierra Mar is only 3 or 4 years old... but was closedcompletely last year for 9 months for renovations...)
delta hotels : And a friend of mine went there for Christmas... and she thought the place wasat least 15 years old...I remember being in the elevator after a rainstorm. All the tile floors wereEXTREMELY wet and resbaladiso.....muy peligroso.... So, deciding not to want toslip and hurt myself, I decided to take the elevator. I got on with two of the maids, or housekeepers. They had brooms, and weretrying to sweep the water off of the floor of the moving elevator... I'm talkingwet up to the ankles here, and water was streaming in through the ceiling...but, the elevator was still moving.It occurred to me (the techno-ignoramus... or, ignorama...) that perhaps thiswasn't too safe. So I went to the main desk, to tell the secretary to the hotelmanager that this wasn't a good idea. I got the shrugged shoulder brush off. So, I tried another tactic... since theyWell, Mona, no elevators in the Bagnareol, but I was amazed to discoverthat it is only 11 years old. The place is falling apart. It was alsoclosed for several months over the summer for renovation. Nothinghappened. I guess that was the writing on the wall.
delta hotels : We are headed to Montreal this weekend for the concert and currently havereservations at the Novotel because it is close to the Molson Center andseemed decent. However, we have been looking online and some of the fancierhotels like the Omni are really cheap and we are debating switching. Doesanyone who has been to Montreal have any recommendations? I have neverheard of a Novotel before and am just getting nervous . . . Thanks!Novotel is also throughout Europe and is a very good chain, and if you endup staying, you will be happy with the qualityNovotel is a fine place -we did the one in NJ the summer of 1999. the showis at the Bell Centre is that just another name for the Molson Center?The Molson Centre was re-named the Bell Centre as of September 01,2002.I stayed at the Delta Centre-Ville a couple of years ago, and I highlyrecommend it. It isn't the cheapest place to stay downtown, but ratesare competitive with other major chain hotels in the area (Sheraton,Marriott, Hiton, Queen Elizabeth, etc). If you're looking for morethan just a place to crash out, The Delta Centre-Ville has an indoorpool, saunas, and a couple of eateries - including a revolving rooftoprestaurant with excellent food and service.
