cheap hotel : If I arrive in Singapore by air or from Malaysia by train how do I finda reasonably priced economy or tourist hotel? And what does anyone recommend for a few days' sightseeing there?thanks in advance-- david morgan, ITT Publitec R+D BV, Amsterdam, Netherlandsdisclaimer: void where prohibitedThere are actually 3 YMCAs in S'pore. DO try to book in advance, as they're often full! They're not that cheap (aroung S$ 60-70 for a double), but then there isn't much that is cheaper here :-( .---------------------------------------- -------------Olivo MiottoInstitute of Systems Science,National University of Singapore,Heng Mui Keng Terrace, Tel: +65-772 6644Singapore 0511. Fax: +65-778 2571Or if you're on a real budget and don't mind dorm style accommodation, try the crash pads that are still around (though getting harder to find last time I was there) They'll often be someone at the airport handing out leaflets, especially near the bus stop. The one I've used is along from the Raffles on Beach Rd (if I remember). Can't remember the name or number, but was shown it by person standing outside, probably because I was carrying a rucksac. If you don't know, crash pads are converted apartments with several bunk beds in each room. There's often AC in at least one room, and prices are about S$10-S$15/pppn. They're good places to meet other travellers, find work and pick up tips on places to go in Indonesia or Malaysia. On the down side they can be cramped and there's little privacy or security for belongings (though I've never lost anything and there are usually lockers available)
cheap hotel : ---All opinions expressed are mine, not Logica'sMalcolm Box +44 171 580 5858 x1468 Right. Bencoolen GH is nearby for 30 s$!JULIUS Try this, too. Good luck, fellow penny pincher.Try Bencoolen House on Bencoolen Street, or Peony Mansionsacross the street (though many of their rooms are just abox, we got a pretty nice room with large windows and a sofaapart from the double-bed and air-con. I though I am the only one who used to go to Bencoolen Street. Now I know we all go there!...Huh...we really all are penny saver!!! Johnny================================== ============================ ======================================== ======================Penny savers? Singapore.... In 1988 I paid 6 S$ in Hawaii Guest House, thissummer 25 S$, Hawaii Hostel, same same, next door. Bencoolen St. of course, no 171.They have renovated the old building and a new fancier hotel is coming up, and most ofthe cheap ones are closing down. What to do: Don’t forget a walk throw China Town, Little India and Arab St.You may want to consult with AAA before you get into o Singapore.Definitely Asstay way from thr e down town shopping area like Orchard Road 'cause it is outrageous there. cheap hotel : As far as things to see and do, here are some of the places I recommend:1. Sentosa Island. This is a resort island just off Singapore and you can get there by cable car, ferry or shuttle/walk. It has one of the world's most beautiful aquariums. YYou can also get a good view of Singapore's skyline from there.2. Jurong Bird Park. If you like birds, you want to go there. Extensive collection of different species of birds. The central exhibit includes a huge cage which you can walk in abd be with tthe flying creatures and a man made waterfall to go with it.3. Newton circus. You will have a chance to experience most of the varietties oft ethinc food that Singapore offers at this location.4. Raffles Hotel. The most famous hotel in Singapore. I'm not quite sure but think this is where the Singapore originated. 5. If you like sea food, go to the restaurants that are located on the East coast.I'm sure any cabby worth his salt can show you where they are.6. Chinese Garden, Japanese Graden, Hwa Paw Vil la are some of the other place sI reccommend you should go if you have the time. cheap hotel : More advice: The transportation system in Singapore are very convenient. Tou can get to the various places by purchasing a Bus or subway guide and finding which bus goes to that location. Bus drivers are knowledgable and helpful ennough to let you now when to get off.In Randall Chong writes: We enjoyed Sentosa Island very much...went by cable car...great view!Underwater World was awesome! Learn how to take photos inspite ofglass...West coast area...very nice. Glad I got to see it. Extensivecollection, is correct! The photos I took of the waterfall came outgreat! It was also funny to see a peacock walking overhead, outsideand on the netting!May very well be one of the most famous in the world! Many writersmentioned the hotel in their books. Aw, don't ask me which ones... I'mnot good at remembering. Make sure you go to the Raffles Museum and ifyou need a present, a pewter letteropener purchased at the hotel willhave the Raffles hotel logo thereon! Worth it! Approx S$37. TheSingapore Sling *did* originate at the hotel's Long Bar! Delicious...and free peanuts to eat. You may also purchase a 1/2 yd ofale. cheap hotel : "Good" and "cheap" are terms that mean different things to different people. Could you tell us what sort of budget you had in mind, and what things would make the hotel "good" for you??In San Francisco, "good cheap hotel" is an oxymoron. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps *Please be careful saying things like that! Some of the recent contributorsto this NG will take that as an endorsement of the Hotel Oxymoron. It iswithin walking distance of Union Square isn't it and they do take creditcards? ;)That's too vague a question. What is your price range and what do you mean by "good?" These are both relative terms. Also, what area of San Francisco interests you?You can find a good hotel in San Francisco, and you can find a cheap hotel in San Francisco. Finding a good hotel that's cheap is the trick. Here's a list of the less expensive hotels I've found in the areas of San Francisco tourists are most likely to stay. I'll leave it to you to decide if they're good or not.
