berlin hotels : I'm planning on visiting berlin for the first time in a couple of weeks. Can someone recommend a moderate to inexpensive hotel. Also some tipson what to see, nightlife etc. Thanks for your help. how about crime there?Thanks.Dick, Berlin is one of my favorite cities. Down the street from Zoo station there is an tourist information in the Europa Center (or was as of my last trip in May 95). They have brochures for English walking tours (run by a private person) that depart from behind Zoo station. These are a good deal and very good. I talk the tour of the Old Jewish Berlin which goes to the East as well as the one that covered significant Berlin sites. (amazing to be snapping photos in front of the old Politburo). I would recommend these tours, I really learned a lot. Nightlife, there is tons of depending on your tastes. On the fourthfloor of a turn- of-the-century building; considered Berlin's most luxuriouspension, it is renowned for its ambience and scrumptious breakfasts. All 8double rooms have private showers, but two are without private toilets (whichwould be found in the hallway). Double rooms $50-$61.Hotel-Pension von Oertzen, Lietzenburger Str. 76, second floor, 1000 Berlin15; phone: (30) 883-3964. Great location, nice rooms, manager very friendly. No lounge however. Right off the Kurfurstendamm. Breakfast $4. In the same building as von Oertzen's. Nice rooms andvery good location, right off the Kurfurstendamm. Rooms do not have bathroomfacilities in them. They are in the hallway. Single: $21; double $38. Breakfast $5.City-Hotel, Kurfurstendamm 173-174; phone: (30)881-2001. Very nice hotel,quite far down the street from where all the "action" is. Very nice woodpaneling in lounge-bar and dining room. Single rooms without bathrooms: $35,with bathroom facilities: $52; double rooms with only shower facilities: $52,with full bathroom facilities: $60.
