The hotel management was stronglycriticized by politicians, and also by the chairman of the workerscouncil ("Betriebsratsvorsitzenden"), Andreas Schlenz, who publiclycriticized the hotel management and was quoted in a newspaper. The management of the Forum Hotel said in April that they don't want to"discriminate a religious community" and that they consider "hateagainst groups like scientology to be a typical german problem". Whendemonstrators came, the hotel called the police.At that time it also came out that other Berlin top hotels like theSteigenberger and the Kempinski have a policy of not making businesswith scientology, and the Steigenberger even keeps a list of scientologyfront groups.Now Schlenz is in trouble: the Hotel management wants him to be removedfrom his workers council post because he talked to the newspaper, and isgoing to court to acomplish this. The Hotel agenda may be bigger:Schlenz has a big role in upcoming trade union talks. But even the hotelmanagement said that they do not see a high likelihood of success.

The court declined toremove him from the post of chairman of the workers council, and wantsto decide it in the main trial on Dec 18th. MP Renate Rennebachsupported him again: in a letter to his union she praised him for beingcourageous enough to criticize his employer, the Forum Hotel.

I'dlike to return the favor provided to me by a myriad of anonymous souls byrecommending the best bargain hotel we used in Germany.Aston Hotels has a brand new business hotel in the Treptow area of formerEast Berlin, just a five minute walk from the Schöneweide S-Bahn stop. Thehotel, which sits on the edge of the Spree River, is spanking new and has acool modern design to it. The rooms are average size but very well equipped. In late November midweek, we received a double room plus their huge hugehuge breakfast buffet for just 99DM total per night.I booked through , a surprisingly comprehensive German hotelbooking outfit. I just checked their site and saw that the 99DM rate is ineffect for the summer, but that may not include breakfast. Even so, the hotelis still a steal!
berlin hotel : I am spending five nights in Berlin and am considering the Hotel AmZoo, or possibly the Best Western Hotel Boulevard. Can anyone giveme feedback or other information in a centrally located area. (I amnot looking for pensions or hostels) thanks for your help.We stayed at the Am Zoo several years ago and the location is hard tobeat. Our room was fairly large with very business-like decorationsand, despite being on the Kudamn, was quiet. Breakfast was a wellstocked buffet. is the web site.First saw the Am Zoo in (IIRC) an older Michael Caine movie "Funeralin Berlin" or one of that series.Its about a 4 min walk to the Zoo S/U -Bahn station and across the street almost from the 'Easyinternet cafe'.In any event.. Id stay in the Kudamn, the rest of Berlin is like a ghost town at night and on Sat and Sunday too.I spent 4 days there last month and spent little time in the hotel and that was my impression. Given that Fed. law restricts store and shop hours, its not hard to see why the streets have little traffic on nights and weekends.
