barcelona hotels : I've been trawling the Google archives in the group, and taking noteof the recommendations for Barcelona hotels. We'll be going in August for only a couple of days, so we wantsomewhere fairly central. We'll also be taking our 7 year olddaughter. so we want to make sure we don't end up in a seedy part oftown. The recommendations I'm currently looking at are the Hotel Turin inPintor Fortuny, the Hotel Continental La Rambla and the HotelContinental Palacete in Rambla de Catalunya. I'm pretty happy that thehotels themselves are OK, but I'm wondering about their location. Also, the Continental apparently doesn't have air conditioning (thewebsite mentions tropical fans but not A/C). Not sure about thePalacete, and the Turin does. It also has private parking (we'll havea car), which the others don't mention.Would I be OK to stay in one of these? Any other similarrecommendations?I have stayed at both the Hotel Continental and the Hotel Turin. They arevery similar in many respects. They are both 3 star hotels and they areabout 2 blocks from each other, located at or near La Rambla, the heart ofBarcelona. They are both a stone's throw away from Plaza Catalunya with allthe subway stations, bus stops and the El Corte Ingles department store.Continental is right on La Rambla, and occupies 2 floors of this 7 or 8story building. Turin is a block away from La Rambla and may be a bitquieter. Continental charges more for room facing La Rambla which I wouldhesitate to take due to the noise situation.
barcelona hotels : When I stayed at Turin, I did have a car and I used their parking lot whichwas no more than a block away. However, they do charge for the parking, about 5-7Euros per day, though I can't remember the exact amount. I did NOThave a car when I stayed at Continental and so it was not an issue thoughyou should email them and ask for parking recommendations. In terms of theinterior I think Continental was a little better because the single room wasbigger and the amenities had more character and had this antique look to it.The rooms in the Turin were your typical cookie-cutter hotel room with plainmodern furniture. I stayed at Continental in the month of September and inTurin, February. In both cases, air-conditioning wasn't really needed. Turindid seem to have A/C though it's not centralized and it's one of these roomunits which may or may not be effective.Continental offers continental breakfast and in fact, the snack room by themain lobby is open 24 hours with tee, fruit and snacks. I did not avail ofbreakfast at Turin and so I can't comment. Also, the snack room atContinental overlooked La Rambla and was great for people-watching. barcelona hotels : I will be in Barcelona October 9, 10,11. I have not been successful so farin finding hotel accommodations. I have been made to understand there issome sort of medical conference/convention at that time. I suspect roomsare blocked for the conference. My question is should I play the waiting game and expect the hotels torelease rooms that are now blocked as they get closer to the conferencedates? Or, is that risky?I have asked 3 travel agents to check a number of 3 star hotels in the cityfor a single. All report unavailable. I only need a clean bed, my own bath, and air would be nice. A safe area is also high on my list of needs.I'm 52 so camping out is not an option.Does any one out there have any tips? Any travel agents out there withideas? Plane tickets already bought so room or no room I will be there.Sounds like you need to go outside the travel agent loop. Try bookingyour own room with the help of a guidebook, or just show up in town &find something. If the 3 stars aren't an absolute requirement, there are quite a fewreasonable hotels along the Ramblas, a fun place to stay. At the end ofSeptember '95 I stayed at one called Hotel Residencia Internacional, which IMO was quite satisfactory regarding safety of area & cleanliness,& where I had a single with bath for around $40 (breakfast a smallamount extra, I think), according to my journal. According to my notes Ifound the place via a reference in a Frommer guide (which gives phone#3/302-25-66, fax 3/317-61-90 - don't know what prefixes). Simply arrivedin town, checked out the first listed place I found, took it. There werea number of other listed hotels of the type in that general area (butthe day was hot & I wasn't into shopping around). barcelona hotels : The location was great, near Liceu metro station (also easy busconnections nearby to practically everywhere), very short walk from thebiggest covered market I'd ever seen (Bosqueria), the nightly passeo(sp.?) on the Rambla passed beneath my window, where a couple of acertain age roasted & sold sweet potatoes or chestnuts from a kettlegrill (wonderful aromas!). People out strolling all over Barcelona inthe evening! Decent tapas bar right up the street. Quiet, the Rambla isnot! but my room was set up with the bathroom nearest the street, & itwas cool enough at night that I could close the window & the bathroomdoor to muffle the sound somewhat. At that time of year I didn't feel the need for air conditioning, quitecool enough at night for sleeping. Hot enough during the day, but Ispent the days out of there, seeing as much of Barcelona as possible.Wonderful city! Don't miss the sardana (community folk dance) outsidethe cathedral, I think it was Sat. & Sun. evenings. We also tried to get Barcelona Accommodation (about 3 weeks ago) over thatperiod with no success, and looking for 3 to4 star accommodation. It is a long weekend - Spanish National DayThere are at least two conventions - including a dentists convention,a music festival, and the start of a couple of sporting events.(The Barcelona City Council have a great web site with all this info available. We ended up changing our itinerary and will be there the weekend before, but Ihave been told that October is a busy month.Good LuckTrevor barcelona hotels : My fiancee and I are getting married January 15, 1994. We bought airplanetickets to Barcelona, Spain for January 16 with a return date of January24, as our honeymoon. Now comes the real quest.... We need to find ahotel to stay at during that time frame which is less than $100/night(please!). We would also like a hotel which has some atmosphere. We boughtthe Fodor's Guide and there are two hotels listed which look interesting(at least on paper). They are the Jardi and the Penensular. Both ofthese hotels are near the Rambla. Does anyone know anything about thesetwo hotels or any others that might fit my description? Any suggestionswould be appreciated. Also, does anyone have any recommendations of restaurants or activitieswhich we *must* not miss? We would be grateful for any suggestions. From: ()Subject: Re: Barcelona - Hotels/Restaurants/Activities Newsgroups: Date: 1993-08-18 06:25:50 PST Kathy MacDonald wrote:--====================================== ======================================== = Tom Gardner Hewlett Packard Laboratories, Filton Rd, Stoke Gifford, Bristol, Avon, BS12 6QZ, ENGLAND.
