amsterdam hotels : I'm going to Amsterdam at the end of March and would like to hear fromanyone that's stayed in a nice, inexpensive, hotel there. Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions (or horror stories) aboutwhere to stay. Thanks. You might look at the Von Onna hotel in the Jordaan, a block or two fromthe Anne Frank house. It's quiet, central location, cheap (about $US60-70), and a large breakfast is included. It was renovated in the lastyear or so. You'll find that rooms in Amsterdam are small, unless you spend a lot moremoney. Nice *and* inexpensive is hard to find in Amsterdam. I can recommend the Hotel de Staadhouder (right next to the heinekenmuseum, close to the Rijksmuseum, and a block from the big market),clean, with elevator, and a good breakfast, good neighborhood, and agood pub on the corner. 85nlg for a double without wc and 150nlg withwc (the "doubles" w/bath I've stayed in were all tripples actually).for just a little more the Hotel Acro (behind the rijks in aneighborhood full of little hotels) is nice and has a restaurant/bar.Hello! My husband and I are traveling with friends to Amsterdam inSeptember. We are wondering what area of the city is best to stay in andif anyone has hotels they can recommend. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!Colette

It's a BestWestern but very nice and with a very helpful staff.Hi,For information on Amsterdam hotels, I can tell you that, at AmsterdamSchiphol airport there isan information center located in the south hall of the airport, They cangive free information on hotels in and arond Amsterdam. You tell themthe price range they will call for you if they make the reservation itcosts you NLG 5.00 (US$2.50) this is very handy because Amsterdam is abusy destination some times all hotels are full. Or go down townAmsterdam with the train from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Centralstation (NLG 6.25 one way) and at the train station there is a VVVoffice this is the place to make reservations for hotels, restaurants, museums and theathers etc..(VVV stands for vereniging voor vreemdelingenverkeer) I am from Amsterdam and just visiting my parents in the FloridaKeysI'll be leaving saturday the 30th for Paris so untill then I can bereached at this address.Have a great time in Amsterdam !!!

amsterdam hotels : I've stayed in many parts of Amsterdam, and each has something to recommend it. There are many hotels littered around the Dam Square, which is very central(although not that nice), and convenient, since many of the tram lines passnear the square. I've stayed at the Rho Hotel, not far from the Dam Square--it's a modest, nicely refurbished hotel with a good breakfast and a pricethat's unlikely to break US$100 per night. Some of the rooms are very small, but they'll move you to one of the larger ones if the hotel isn't too full. The Leideplein is also a popular area, as it's a nightlife center andconvenient to clubs, theaters, cinemas and reasonable restaurants. Wefrequently stay at the American Hotel on the Leidseplein, which is one ofAmsterdam's nicer hotels. They're currently offering a rate of fl275 a nightfor a double room (about US$140) which is a good deal for this hotel. If you like quiet, there are many nice canal-side hotels in quieterneighborhoods (but still quite central). The Estherea is on the Singel canal, and consists of several canal houses. The staff is exceptionally nice. Roomsizes vary dramatically-- some are spacious, while others are very tiny indeed.

amsterdam hotels : We stayed at The Apple Inn, near Vondel Park, within walking distance to themuseums. Nice place. good breakfast. Delightful owners who are englishspeaking.(as well as otehr languages) it's right on the # 2 tram line too.also stayed in the Jordaan at the Acacia Hotel. (two separate vacations)Right on a canal. Owner speaks english, also plus more. both of these placesare very reasonable. and i'd reccommend them any time. m aI stay near the Heineken Museum in a little 2 star place...I find it a verygood value...the only thing you give up is a phone...but who am I going tocall in Amsterdam?.generally though I'd recommend the Jordaan (out the front door of centraalstation to the right -away- from the red light district)...there are anumber of hotels on Niewe Zidj Voorburgwaal in all price ranges and sincethere are major tramlines running down the middle of that street it'sconvenient.Amsterdam hotels are not cheap. We spent 2 weeks there at the end ofJuly. Get an Entertainment 98 book (we used the Paris one, but any ofthe European ones cover the same hotels) and fax them. If you'releaving in September you'll have to get express delivery on theEntertainment book.

amsterdam hotels : We ended staying at the Golden Tulip Royal Barizon, in a great room onthe fifth floor overlooking the Leidesplein, for about $130 a night(said to be half the normal rate -- we *did* witness a guy who needed aroom and they told him it would cost 595 Guilders). This did notinclude breakfast which would have cost another $16 per person. Wenormally went to a corner cafe for coffee, and later went to places thathad inexpensive lunch menus (as compared to the same courses at dinner). There was another hotel in a converted canal house that cost about $90including breakfast. It was at least a star lower than the Golden Tulipbut Frommer liked it. However it was not air conditioned and the lasttime we were there in July we stayed in a similar hotel during a heatwave and found it unbearable. This time the weather wasn't quite thathot but there were days we were glad we had the a/c. Many of the hotelshad already filled their quota of half-priced Entertainment rooms duringthe popular time we were there but that shouldn't be such a problemnow. (Also, we did only make our airplane reservations two weeks beforewe left so we there wasn't a lot of advance notice for a hotel.)
